Any idea how you change this?

Run the van low on fuel.

undo the pipe.
Undo the wire.
Undo the ring of 10mm headed nuts.
withdraw sender making sure not to drop retainer into tank.
Undo rubber pipe attached to sender inside thr tank.
As a rule, the retainers break, so get a spare ready.
They are still available from VW, but not the cheapest item.

I have a load of things at the machine shop at the moment being made from stainless, the fuel tank sender unit retainers are one the list but quite far down it!
