no wipers,no blowers,no windscreen washers,anyone had this?

Post by deegee19 »

Hey guys, back again with an odd one on my 85 DG wasser.out in the lovely english weather we've all been enjoying the other day, raining cats and dogs, all of a sudden wipers cut out in up position.
Pulled over, checked fuses(bullet type)all good, but then no blower ans no windscreen washers!.

Bus running fine, everything else working ok,anyone got any ideas where to check?,can't find any links on the wiki for it,anyone seen any?, would appreciate your fine input as always, cheers,DeeGee :ok

Check fuse No 10 (16amp), counting left to right. This has cropped up before; normally caused by a seized/nearly seized heater blower motor drawing too much current and rupturing the fuse leaving you without wipers (early style fuseboard only, bullet rather than blade fuses). There is a guide in the wiki on how to separate the wipers and blower motor onto separate fuses I think, but in the meantime, just don't use the blower (and replace the ruptured fuse obviously).

Check you have power at fuse 10 with the ignition switched on. If not it could be the relief/load reduction/X contact (it goes by various names) relay in position 3 has packed up.

"PRE-85 FUSEBOX MOD - ENSURING WIPERS WORK IF BLOWER KILLS FUSE" - last article on page below. Applies to some 85 models too.

Hi All,Covkid, thanks for the link to the fuse upgrade, had a dig round the wiki after reading the previous posts and came up with nothing.Reading back alll the other answers to my problem it looks like I gave the impression I used my blowers when the wipers went, apologies for the mix up guys, the wipers just stopped working while using them in a down pour,I then checked the fuses box,all fuses fine and then noticed while checking other controls that the windscreen washers didn't work and also the blower motor.
Will the problem still be related to the blower/wiper fuse in that situation?,thanks guys look forward to reading your thoughts, many thanks,DeeGee :ok

No, we just mentioned that is it's the most common cause of the fuse rupturing with early fuseboxes. You do have the early one presumably?
If you're sure the fuse is fine, then there must be a break in the wiring somewhere; the fact that all the equipment associated with this fused feed has suddenly stopped working suggests it is on the actual fused feed side of the circuit rather than the switches or returns to earth from the individual items of equipment - although it wouldn't hurt to check the condition of the earth crowns anyway.
You'll need a multimeter......and an early fusebox circuit diagram would come in handy too. Unfortunately the watercooled (blue) Haynes Manual circuit diagram is for the later fusebox.

Not that I know of - have a look

I might be able to dig one up from somewhere in the labyrinth of VW/Camper related stuff on my hard drive that I thought 'might come in useful one day'

Not just yet though, I have stuff to do this afternoon....

Right, good news is I found a couple of diagrams buried in a PDF document for 1983 and 1985 vans which shows the blower and wipers all running off fuse 10. The diagrams are for american vans but probably are relevant to uk vans too. Bad news is the PDF is too large for me to email and I can't take a snap shot of the relevant pages and chuck them on Photbucket and upload them onto the forum. Best I could do was copy and paste them into a .doc file but the quality is, well, pants. So pants in fact it'd be pointless me emailing you them so I'll get someone to print them (I don't have a printer) straight off the PDF and scan them; then I can upload them to Photobucket and chuck 'em on here.

Obviously that ain't going to happen till tomorrow....

Hi All,1664,thanks for all your efforts mate, look forward to looking that info.had a dig around under the dash this aftie and found that the 16 amp fuse had such a hairline split in it I obviously didn't look very well in the p*******g rain!.
So I guess I may have just been a victim of the info you guys all put on here with the 2 circuits being on the one fuse.
Have now split the 2 up onto 2 fuses as recommended on the wiki link from CovKid,cheers guys, this could have happened to me up in the lakes at 9pm at night in the p********g rain with the bus full of camping gear2 kids and one irate missus when it did in fact happen in an april shower(in may)that lasted all of 5 minutes on the way back from the shop.
So that's a great big thank you from me to you all!,thanks very much guys! :ok :ok :ok :ok :ok :ok :ok

That's probably for the best - I did find the relevant diagram but I've been struggling to get it 'readable' to put on here. Glad you got it sorted; now buy a cheap multimeter, it's not like you'll never use it owning one of these vans
