Re: weird problem
What sort of meter are you using to measure the current? 45 Amps is beyond the draw you would get with everything switched on. Are you sure you've not misread the scale? If something is really pulling 45 amps and not doing any work I'd expect cables to be getting hot and insulation to be melting. I ...

Re: weird problem
Ignition on 45 amps, this I think is to high. may even be higher as the meter only reads 45 amp. That's a lot of amps to be doing "nothing". Is the leisure battery completely flat and the starter is trying to charge it? Try disconnecting the leisure battery and see if the 45 amp draw disa...

Re: Air-cooled engine knocking
we put it in storage for the winter as she wasn't driving too well then. Only been out a week or two!
Did you drain the petrol? If not fill up with fresh fuel and try to clock up enough miles to empty the tank again.

Re: Where are the Aircooled engine experts in the South?
An oil leak on an air-cooled engine is normally going to be:
1) Rocker cover gaskets
2) Oil cooler
3) Crankcase oil seal
4) Loose oil filter or filler neck
Where do you think the leak is?

Re: Low oil pressure at warm idle/lots of metallic in oil
There's a rubber elbow on the left hand side of the engine bay in the corner under the carb. If you follow the metal pipe it's connected to across the bulkhead you'll find a tee on the other end attached to the other carb an servo pipe. There are even some short sections of rubber hose under the air...

Re: Low oil pressure at warm idle/lots of metallic in oil
Well that explains mine as well. The rubber tee and elbow were both shot when I got my van.

Re: Low oil pressure at warm idle/lots of metallic in oil
The head in my photo is a non-VW one that must have been fitted when the engine was re-conned before I got the van. Probably the same time the solid lifters got installed and the 009 dizzie. Like Kev said, most of my engine is over 30 years old and well past the design life VW expected out of it. I ...

Re: Low oil pressure at warm idle/lots of metallic in oil
http://i1043.photobucket.com/albums/b435/Hotel-BOXY/valveseat_zps5470a029.jpg One of my valves tried escaping out the top of the head. The van would still truck along at 60mph on the flat and only showed the power loss when climbing hills even in this state. At least being an air-cooled engine the ...

Re: Low oil pressure at warm idle/lots of metallic in oil
Isn't there something on the Ratwell page about checking the pushrods with a magnet to check if solid or hydraulic?

Re: Low oil pressure at warm idle/lots of metallic in oil
If you've got hydraulic lifters

If your engine has been re-conned you might have solid lifters.

Re: Low oil pressure at warm idle/lots of metallic in oil
my main concern is fuel economy My van has got twin solex carbs, standard dizzie and only ever sees over 20 mpg on a motorway run under 60mph. Around town and up and down the hills of the SW it manages 16-18 mpg. The only saving grace is that the van is always full of toys, food and booze. If I wan...

I've found out it has a single weber carb so must have been upgraded.
Not exactly an upgrade

Re: Van not starting - any ideas!
You can rule out any electrical faults by checking you've got a spark. Just take out a plug, hold it against the engine casing and see if you're getting a spark when turning the engine over. If the plug is sparking, happy days, unless you've screwed up the timing or put the leads on in the wrong ord...

Re: Van not starting - any ideas!
Ditch the filter in the engine bay. Cheap plastic filter and hot engine bay aren't a good combination.
