Thanks for your advice. It turned out to be a faulty switch. I bought a new one from JK, but it didn't fit the dash, and I had to leave a wire off the connection block as it caused the hazards to flash permanently despite the switch not being on! Bizarre. Ended up swapping for a genuine part from VW...
