Re: Unable to set timing to spec
Hi Aidan, Thanks for the reply - I managed to get the timing to spec. I got the engine really hot (to the point of the fan coming on) and then was able to get it 5 BTDC, rev counter bouncing about a bit at 5 BTDC, but it doesn't die. So I thought, will it still start from cold? It's been a few days ...

Re: Unable to set timing to spec
Thanks for the reply. If you have a look at the one picture closely you can see the notch in the dizzy body. At TDC, the rotor is 90 degrees from the notch, but it is still pointing to cylinder one's lead. The reason the dizzy is rotated 90 degrees is to stop the vacuum advance pushing into the wate...

Re: Unable to set timing to spec
Hi, thanks for the replies. It's the 1.9 flat four watercooled. I've wiggled the distributor cap and you can probably move it the equivalent of about 3-4 degrees but it's definitely on the correct way. This model doesn't have the idling stabilising unit. In case anyone asks, the degrees on the timin...

Re: Inspecting engine repairs
Yeah they apparently put new big end bearings in a couple of weeks back. The engine was reconditioned last year December and then I bought the van in August thinking I was getting a good engine but I was having problems with it from the start. I took it back to where the engine came from but it was ...

Unable to set timing to spec
I'm unable to set my timing to spec (5 BTDC with the vacuum hose disconnected at around 900 RPM) on my 1.9l T25. I recently got the van back from the garage and they'd set it very advanced, and it seemed to run OK, but I know it's supposed to be 5 degrees BTDC, so I tried to set it to that. The clos...

Re: Inspecting engine repairs
Thanks for your advice.. I'm really frustrated now because they apparently put new big end bearings in (and considering it was supposed to be a reconditioned engine from them they should have been replaced when it was reconditioned). If I take it back to them they may try to make more money out of m...

Re: Inspecting engine repairs
Sorry, I assumed it was a simple oil pressure sensor.
The van is a camper conversion, T25, 1984, 1.9l (although the engine block says it's a 2.1l DJ).
I've attached some pictures if that helps..
Thanks again, M

Re: Inspecting engine repairs
Well I took her for the drive and she did quite well, except she did get really hot during the middle of the day.. and at times there was a headwind and hills, but I took a break when she got hot and waited till later in the day finishing off the journey at night. She's running very well when she's ...

Re: Inspecting engine repairs
Hi, Thanks for the reply - there are a lot of things to take into consideration. But I think I get the gist of it. Just to confirm some of the things you've mentioned, when you talk about heat, you're talking about localised heat of the sleeves, rather than the overall heat of the engine as measured...

Re: Inspecting engine repairs
Hi, Thanks for the reply. As I mentioned, I don't particularly trust these guys so he might have added some things in to justify the price. Cross-hatch honing vs overbored - I expect these guys would use the term interchangably. Yes, I was a little surprised to see the values vary so much. I went ro...

Re: Inspecting engine repairs
Hi All, Thanks for the advice. I took it for a drive and warmed her up, then checked: Started well from cold, idled nicely, no smoke from the exhaust. Didn't quite do a plug chop but the plugs were a decent colour. I'll check them again after a longer run (they replaced the newly bought 4 terminal B...

Inspecting engine repairs
Hi All, I'd like to know what checks would be good for an engine that's been repaired. I was having problems with my engine (no compression on one cylinder and then a blown gasket or water jacket) so I took it in for repair and I should be getting it back soon. Apparently the van drives like a dream...

Re: Length of Fuel Pump Push Rod? Anyone sell new?
Would you mind uploading a pic of the rod once you've received it? I'd like to see what the sharp end of it looks like.
Mine is 2mm short (98mm) but I still seem to be getting enough fuel.

Re: Running on 3 cylinders....??
Failing Aidan's advice on removing the leads one at a time to see if you're getting a spark in all your cylinders, a compression test is a quick way to see if there's something wrong with one of your cylinders.
Does your engine make any puffing/wheezing or backfiring noises, or is it very smokey?
