Mickyfin wrote:Thanks, I have found two blues which look pretty much the same, so will go for those I think.

On the other hand, how would I go about mixing the colours to match?

Avenue coatings mix paint if you send them a sample. they mixed the colour I sent them exactly.

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

Yes, I am happy with the result. When I look at it and think it only cost me £115 for the paint mixed to VW colours, compared to £3k for a spray job, then I am definitely happy. Especially as I have chipped/scratched the paint on the doors a tiny bit during reassembly so I can touch it up myself. It...

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

Started the final rust rub down, prep and red oxide primer on everything in April. The first coat of Rustoleum went on the main shell in the first week of June (before the van's 40th birthday!). Then it was both days every weekend alternating between rubbing back, painting the doors that were remove...

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

Hey - this happened to me when I didn't wash it quickly enough when sanding. I found a had to go over it all lightly again with sandpaper to shift it. My sanding process now is to get one of those spray bottles that you use in the garden, cover the panel I am sanding in water spray. Get some 1200 we...

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

Did my 3rd coat today in the sweltering heat. Must've been about 40 degrees under the tarpaulin and I must've lost about a stone in sweat! I knocked off the top of the orange peel with 1200 grit paper this time in an attempt to not go back through to primer as much. It worked, except for a cou...

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

Folkers - how many coats is that? I put my second coat on today and thinned it a bit more, maybe as much as 25% white spirit and it has dried much better this time around. Less orange peel. I think when I flat it back this time, I may use a finer grade than 600 grit so I don't take as much paint off...

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

Cool - I should just have faith with it! How smooth have you flatted it? I am still a little concerned about the slight orange peel I have, but I guess that can be flatted on the next coat when there is a bit more paint built up?

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

Thanks, I was thinking of trying a touch more thinners to see if it makes any difference. I'm using about 400ml of paint to approx. 100ml of white spirit at the moment and giving it a good stir. I've noticed that the paint tends to thicken up in the tray as you paint as it begins to dry.

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

That was after a week and felt fine when sanding. I think being under a tarpaulin and plastic is the equivalent of parking it in a greenhouse!

Do you have to knock back all the orange peel? At the moment, if I run my hand over it I cannot feel the orange feel, but you can still slightly see it.

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

With the crappy weather today I ended up flatting back the van after it's first coat. Is it usual to go through the paint in places when rubbing back with 600 grit paper by hand? Should you try to sand all the orange peel out so the surface is completely matt again? I fear that if I knock every sing...

Re: Paint Your Wagon - with a roller!

I've not used a RAL paint, but asked Avenue to mix me up some Savannah Beige. They didn't know what the code for that was, so I went to Halfords and got a spray can mixed up, then sprayed an old tabacco in I found in the garage and then sent the sample in. I was expecting the mixed paint to be a sha...
