q 1 is the gear stick supposed to have a spring return to the center of the H gate ?
q 2 how much resistance should there be shifting gear ? mine seems slow and stiff to change gear 1-2-3-4 up and down the box clutch is fine.

I'd say yes, but in reality not very effective, coming from the box, not the undercab gear-lever box

Q2 How much resistance should there be shifting gear ? mine seems slow and stiff to change gear 1-2-3-4 up and down the box clutch is fine.

Well, that could be many things, but of course, first, you must ensure the lever, underfllor box and particularly the rods form front to back are stiff with old grease. That is No. 1 and certianly will not help.
Next, Aidan may well tell you, old gearbox oil may not help...
Once you have dropped (and checked the fir tree) gbox oil and changed for correct fresh lube, and serviced your whole selwection mechanism, is then the time to question the box itself..

Aidan* will advise or check the Wikipedia

Usually a good modern semi-synthetic 75W-90 gear oil seems to be the recommendation, make sure the refill oplug can be removed before you drain the box from the drain plug, if you know what I mean....
