Can anyone help me? My 1983 DF engined camper needs a new voltage reg. This is a tiny 3 prong electronic component on the back of the dash which should convert dash instrument volts to 10 from whatever is there at the time. VW can supply the part on back order 2 weeks or more £12:( but I understand this is a standard electronic industry part (7810T). My problem is finding a UK electronic part supplier. So far Google has drawn a blank. I know this part should be less than £1 from such a source. The cost is not the issue I dont want to go on my next holls in 2 weeks time with no fuel or temp guage again. Any helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

I could be wrong here ( I will go off and check) but don't those have the input and output pins the opposite way round ? (with the earth staying in the centre & tab of course) meaning you have to install them "upside down".

Note that in the pic the 12 volts goes in on terminal "A" which, when the regulator is facing you with it's "legs" towards you, is on the right, and the 10 volts comes out of the leg that will be on your left.

This is the opposite way round to the industry standard 10 Volt regulator where the 12 volts goes into the leg that would be on your left, if the legs are pointing towards you and the regulator has it's numbers uppermost) and the 10 volts comes out of the right hand leg.

So you mount the industry standard one "the other way up" taking into account that the "tab" acts as a heat sink as well as an "earth" so it would be advisable to add some heatsink metal to what will be the face that is now facing upwards (this is really hard to explain in writing !! - but I hope you get what I mean )

By the way any Maplin store should have these in stock too. E D I T = no Maplins don't stock the 10 volt ones

Well remembered! You are right - I had forgotten about that.
A piece of ali heatsink will suffice if there is somewhere that it can be bolted to close by, or pack it out with ali strips.

E D I T - or you could mount it remotely from its present position using wire to link back to the circuit. brickyard post on the subject that I replied to years ago

The correct regulator is a TCA700Y. For some reason they seam to be megga bucks form some places, VW's price is quite reasonable in comparison. One here from ebay Singapore may get here in time.

Highly unlikely - chips seem to take about 3 weeks from the far east to me. The linked ones only say post within 10 days!

IIRC, Farnell require a minimum order of £30-00. If so, hunt around for another supplier (e.g. C.P.C.) or use a 9V one for the time being. It is possible to make a small mod to a standard 9V reg so that it regulates at 9.6V or even 10.2V (well within VAG spec of 10V + or - 0.5V for their 900y regulator). The vag reg fits into a socket which could be a problem though there is always a workaround (if you really do not want to pay the ridiculous price being asked for the vag component - a total rip off (I would never pay that amount for a component that only costs a few pence!)

Look at the picture above of the T220 case, just mount any equivalent or 9v type upside down and use an oversized but smallish nut to act as both a spacer and provide a heat conducting path from the tab to the mild steel plate the regulator is normally mounted onto - job done.

Thanks so much for your replies everyone. After further Google action and a few phone calls I managed to track down and order 3 (due to lack of soldering confidence) industry standard 10v volt regs at 83p each. They are from RS components a UK supplier of such things. They are due to arrive by post next Mon so I will keep you posted.
I intend to test one with volt meter battery supply etc to determin which pole is 10v output, Cheers ghost123uk

It will be as in my second picture, with the things number facing up and the legs facing you, it is 12 v in at the left, earth in the middle and 10 v out at the right.

Good luck, should be easy enough to fit though

As advised I fitted the Industry standard volt reg upside down with 2 oversize washers (shaped to fit) sndwiched between it and circuit board. Output is 10.2v andfor the first tine since owning DOTY I can see how much juice in tank and how hot she's running. Result! and all for 83p plus postage £7. I now have 2 spare volt regs if anyone needs them. Next Job make the unknown pop top fit a bit better and get a key cut for the tailgate lock.
