I saw quite a few of these in Iceland.

Amongst many other outrageously modified landrovers, landcruisers, hilux's, etc etc.
Judging by the state of even the classified 'easy' 4x4 roads I'd say they're not doing it just for looks!

A few years ago I was involved in some glacier/outburst-flood research in the central highlands of Iceland [stick Kverkfjoll into GoogleMaps]. Anyway to get to the site we had to drive ~60 miles off the main road along a track which wended its way through a constantly changing (and utterly awe-inspiring) landscape of lava fields, rivers, hills and deep sand traps. The junction where the track starts is a farm/hamlet called Modhrudalur and the owner of the farm ranges his sheep across all the land between the farm and Kverkfjoll...yes, 60miles away! [NB. There aren't that many of them but knowing the area as I do now, I've no idea what they actually eat or indeed how the hell he finds them after they've been roaming].

So to the point of this post. Travelling in two fully-laden Landies (a 110 and 90 with trailors) it always took us between 2.5 and 3 hours to make this final stage of the trip in to the hut at Kverkfjoll. The farmer had an Artic-trucks Disco with the big wheelies. He used to do the same trip in 50-60 minutes!!

For some reason he always seemed to be smiling!
