Are there any add ons or tuning tricks i can do to get more power out of my 1.9 dg petrol motor?

You've clearly got a case of 'bought the wrong van' syndrome Simplest solution is to swap it for a 2.1. Do NOT be conned into fitting a Webber in a vain attempt to gain magical power ... it ain't going to happen, plus you'll need a filling station every 100 miles or so

lol. No the van is now part of the family wouldnt swop it now not after all the work ive done to it. I was just wondering if there was an easy tweek out there but not by the looks of it
is swopping it for a 2.1 a straight swap?

Fit some Dellorto DRLA carburettors

might be cheaper getting a 2.1 though
You see a 2.1 is basically a 1.9.
VW released an extra 40 odd BHP by making it a long stroke engine. ie it sucks longer, squeezes more, bangs bigger, and blows longer.. 112 BHP makes a world of difference
your 1.9 DG ancillaries bolt on to the 2.1 DJ casing including the inlet manifold and carburettor, it's physically the same size, but gives you loads of usable power.

Imagine a world where you don't change gear to go up a 4% gradient, but actually accelerate up it

£500 to £600 for a non leaker with lowish mileage

I got one from a van breaker swapped it in a day.

With all these wonderful fellows on the forum, I'm a bit disappointed to see that the modern answer to engine tuning seems to be, 'stick a bigger engine in.' So american....

What happened to skimming the flywheel,grinding in the cylinders, polishing the ports, improve the breathing ,maximise the carbs, you know, all the stuff that costs next to nothing.

That's VW tuning.

That lot would cost more and take longer than sticking a pre-loved DJ in it ... then again you could do all that to a DJ instead

Yes that's tuning, making it run better and more efficiently ... not increasing horse power in a great barrow full

More bhp from a 1.9 is only achievable in realistic usable amounts by better breathing and fuelling, you say next to nothing.. Delorto carburettors are £600 to buy... but I doubt that the dizzy heights of an extra 40 BHP would be achieved in a one stop hit like fitting an engine that has already had the work done by a development team from VW.

I'm sure if VW were to have not caved in to customer requirements the VW flat four would have developed into a scooby slayer of an engine, as it is Subaru did it without them.
So a Subaru flat four is another way to increase power to levels unimagined.
Again physically similar but far more intricate in running with a lot of electric wizardry to make it powerful... doubling the power to 140 BHP
That would cost about £2000+ with the doner car and things to mate Japan with West Germany

i put a recon 2.1 in my van to replace the 1.9. it does make a difference, although i wouldnt say it made 40bhp of difference. its much better on hills and generally nicer to drive AND the best thing is it seems to do a bit better of juice! i am happy with it.. the engine cost £900 form vw elite and it cost about £400 to fit by steve at gasure in chester. it is just a straigtht swap, but the only thing that's different is an oil cooler is needed which was easily done.

er er....... well thats what 40 BHP does.. what did you expect... gut wrenching acceleration
