westy fog light

Hi All

i have done some research on this as there are plenty of threads but my question is slightly different. My van was modified with an aftermarket fog lamp and I want to change it to one in the rear light cluster.

I have got the correct RH cluster with the bulb holder and intend to run a wire from the left hand cluster to the right hand cluster to complete the wiring at the rear of the van. So far so good.

I want to wire up the VW fog light switch on the dash ( I have bought one). However I have two problems:

firstly I couldnt find the wires which are meant to plug into the back of the switch from the fusebox. I presume that is because they are not on the loom of a German van - but someone told me that they should be there. so I had another look and found this:

which is a grey wire with white tracer - is this the right one?

secondly - i have done the https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/VW ... ing_buzzer which uses relay position 7 on the relay board in the fusebox. It seems that this is the position i would need to use to put the relay (86?) for the foglight wiring - so have I stymied myself? Will I have to choose between one or the other or can i wire the Fog switch to another relay position?

cheers

I wouldn't have thought that you would need a relay to run a rear fog light. For a pair of front high power ones yes but not for a single bulb.

I agree
A straight wire through from power source to switch to bulb.. would be OK

thanks

I was going from the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual - which links the fog switch up to the headlights - would be nice to do the "proper" wiring if i could.

I had a trawl through bentley page 97.123 Gy/W is conected to a relay marked ECS MAL LT AND SWITCH and comes from the digifant control unit, seems to be engine management related?

Don't forget that the Bentley is an American publication for American wiring also - useful as a guide but not gospel for our vans.

hello again - neglected the thread for a while

yes i have got the three position switch - so i dont think a straight wire to the back solution will work - I tried wiring the aftermarket lamp up to the threeway switch and it didnt work no matter what combination i had the wires in.....

i could get the wiring from another van but that would not be worth it if i have already used the relay for something else (I have a feeling this sentence shows the depth of my ignorance about automotive electrics :run )

Hi,

I'm also trying to get my rear fog light working. I got a switch from justkampers, but haven't got a clue as to putting the whole thing together. Does anybody have a van with working rear fog lights who would be willing to draw a basic diagram? I gues the connector behind the switch could be replicated with terminal spades? Do I make any sense?

I'm trying to get the MOT done so that I can register my Syncro in the UK...any help is much appreciated!!

Cheers

There's already a wiring diagram in the Haynes if you want?

Hey Kev, thanks for yor reply...I've got the Haynes manual, but there's no way on this earth I can make sense of that diagram...I was hoping somebody would take pitty on me and write up something in steps with indications as to where to connect each cable - for instance, the switch has three connections at the back, but I'm only installing a rear fog light, how do I go about connecting a wire to which connection on the switch?...I know I might not be making much sense...this is how lost I am...

What switch are you using ?

Found this as a guide to wiring diagrams might be worth a look over

Hi Pirata

What year is your van - or more to the point what kind of fuses does it use, blades or the older ceramic ones?

If the earlier I have done the conversion and may be able to help.

Hi Pete, thanks for your reply. I've completed the installation now. The only thing that I'd like to do is for the fog light to work only when the headlamps are on. I'd also like for the led to be on whatever position the switch is in, but I'm not sure that's possible.
