wiper problem...ALMOST fixed

Have searched the forum and found similar problems but nothing the same, so here goes...

When we bought the van the wipers were a bit dodgy in that they were VERY slow. After awhile they stopped working altogether, fuse was fine so suspected motor. New motor fitted today, and we only have one speed, that being the normal one click of the switch one. Now, looking at other wiper faults on here, it looks like it will be the relay to blame, questions are

1. relay to blame?
2. where is the wiper relay?
3. Anyone know where I can get one?

If its one of the relays on the fuse board I may have one, as I just found a spare fuse board in my pile of spares yesterday

PM me your address, and I'll lob the fixed-interval one I took out of ours.

Alternatively, have a rummage on fleaBay for a number 99 relay, and revel in the joys of variable delay intermittent, for about a tenner.

I notice you don't mention the column switch
if it's worn out it may need replacing
VW heretage can supply new column switches

ufortunatly you have an early van

i doubt if you have a 19/99 relay as they are more common on post 86 vans(blade fuses)

intermittent was an option in the early days tho.

see if you have 4 wiper switch positions

say off is neutral
go down for intermittent
up 1 for slow
up 2 for fast

chances are you have no down!

did you check to see if the spindles that the wiper arms bolt too are seized?

with lots of vans i see only a couple have true 2 speed wipers! fast really is fast! or should be

Thanks for all the replies guys and Adrianc for the kind offer of a relay. (not sure if it will be the correct one though)

I have now checked my spare fusebox, relays are totally different. neither of them are labelled 19/99, neither of mine are either. and both sit together in this fusebox, wheras mine have a space

I have taken pic of my fusebox

I have taken pic of my relays....
a 3 pin one

and a 4 pin one

I have looked at my switch, it is 3 position, so off, up one for slow (currently working) and up 2 for fast (not currently working). Remember, old wiper motor was slow, then stopped altogether, new one only works on one speed.

"*E D I T* by googling the VW part numbers, the black 3 pin is my indicator relay, so it must be the other one

Any more help would be appreciated, obvioulsy a relay would be easiest/cheapest to replace on a test basis.

Can anybody confirm the 19/99 relays are the right ones for an older van? If so, I'll lob mine in the post, otherwise I won't worry.

as my previous post other thought you had later wiring.

yours does NOT have intermittent wipers!

no 19 is standard fit and would be in the fuse box if you did!

Once my wipers went slow and a randomly would not work and then one day they stopped completely. It was the bolt that attaches the motor to the wiper mechanism that had come lose. You can just reach the bolt under the dash.

I seem to recall that the switches all have the intermittant position - there is a white plastic "block" to stop it going down (yes, down) - You can remove the stopper, and fit the intermittant relay. (I can't remember if early vans need some wiring work?? Maybe).

That link in the above post is the info I was looking for. If you adding and fiddling, you may want to do that too!

I have read the info for the mod, however I think it would be wise to have working wipers before trying to upgrade them, as I wouldn't want to add to my woes

from the left relays early
1 = flasher
2= ambulance light
3= load reduction relay
4= foglamp
5 = wiper

so you need a 19 in 5

Just looked at mine and it's the same as yours. Two relays one on the left & one in the middle. Looking at the circuit diagram in the Haynes the power comes through fuse ten to the switch, and then three wires go to the motor. If one speed works then the problem is in the supply between the switch and the motor, or the motor itself.
