Am i in the right place, before i put a load of fluid in it... have removed the cover from around the speedo and clock and have checked what i think is the gearbox fluid well, it is empty... gonna fill it up, just to make sure,,, it is for the gearbox!!!

Noooooo......thats the brake/clutch reservoir (brake/clutch fluid) .you dont want to be putting gear oil in there.

So that is empty, need to put some of that in there then???

Hi,the well you have found is for the brake fluid- I believe the clutch master cylinder feeds from this also- the gear box oil is topped up from under the van on the gearbox -someone else will prob be a long in a mo to confirm Jack

is it just a question then of getting a generic brake/clutch fluid then and pouring it in. the gear changes have been clunky recently, would my dry well be the answer????

Use Dot 4 to top up your brake/clutch reservoir.
But if its empty you may have a leak, so keep an eye on it.

If the reservoir is empty(ish) you may have to bleed it due to air getting into the clutch system. If it carries on losing fluid and you don't refill it you'll lose the brakes too.

So is that just fill it up then pump the brakes? And is it just generic fluid?

No

The reservoir supplies both the clutch hydraulic system and the brakes hydraulic system. The fluid take off point for the clutch is higher than the brakes, so if you are losing fluid you lose the clutch before you lose the brakes. If your clutch is playing up but your brakes are fine, then the fluid has probably dropped below the clutch take off pipe but not the brakes (yet).

Don't know what specific fluid; have a read of the Wiki............and get a Haynes manual too If you really don't have a clue what you're doing I'd find someone who does. Not easy I know....and put your location in your club profile there might be someone on here three streets away who could help.

Based solely on the above post you need to take this vehicle to a garage and then get yourself booked on a basic car maintenance course before something unfortunate and/or expensive happens.

Absolutely solid advice. Get a professional to sort this out for you. Never mess with brakes until you really know what you are doing.
