Since mTdi engine is almost finished I've been working on the Syncro gearbox, because 4th gear pops out while driving...
Dismantling the gearbox (AHF) and then analyzing it I have seen some debris but not very important failures... syncro hubs are ok and 4th pinion teeth has some sharp, so I need to replace them. I had to dismantle the spare gearbox I have, AAN, and is much better, almost new, so I think I am going to use AAN 4th gear pinions, but I want to replace also all the synchronizers, needle bearing and big ball bearings...
Aidan Talbot has adviced me about that and now I want to look for a good place to buy the parts I need, but at the same time not to spend a lot of money... you know... taht thing called "crisis"...
Another question I have is... I have seen 3rd/4th syncro hub modern version with 3 holes on it... Is that a job that a lathe operator can do??
I am going to put the oil baffles too... Has anyone more gearbox rebuilding pics?
Some pics I took of my AHF gearbox...

I would think Aidan can supply the parts..... if you ask nicely..
If you find them cheaper than he can supply, then you may want to ask him about them.. there are some crappy parts out there... and saving a few quid in the box only for it to break 3000km later and wreck something.... will cost a whole lot more....

Yeh, the only thing is 4th will be shorter. But I can use the AAN pinions. Am I wrong?

Yeh I have sent Aidan a list with parts numbers and I am waiting for the answer... 4 years ago I asked for parts to Bernd Jaeger and the parts he sent me were VW OEM, prices were really good.

4 years ago, oem was easyer to find.. a few things have changed since then.. unfortunately.. but as said, if you do find something, let Aidan know.. he'll appreciate the contact..
Aidan always does his best.. I can assure you of that..

I know I know, He has adviced me on my syncro gearbox rebuild, what kind of parts change and what to do, and not all the mechanics do that "for free", he is a very good guy and his help is really appreciated... in fact, as I think you know, I have 2 syncro gearboxes, so the spare gearbox will be sent to Aidan for a super rebuild. Is good to have a rebuilt gearbox ready to change if this one I am fixing suddenly explodes!
Now the only thing I want is rebuild the gearbox and finish the van to enjoy it!! I will stay here in the Canaries for 2 or 3 months more and then I will go to UK... New life, new job and new friends!!

(and new weather

)
I will miss a friend I had when I was living in Ireland a guy called syncropaddy

... I think he has a sickness called syncronitis, you heard of it?? and you heard of that guy??

Well, I finished the gearbox one month ago... I had some problems with the oil baffles instructions, but finally could be done. Hope the gearbox will be okay for a long time. I want to find out about the speed on 4th in the highway... will be soon...

Well,
Just to update some info about the gearbox. After 7500 kms still ok, I changed the oil twice, first time there was some metal in the magnet but second time almost clean. I have installed a decoupler and now the van is a real 4x4. Awesome behaviour with the decoupler (and solid shaft). I dont know what to do with VC, I think I will save some money and one day I will buy a rebuilt VC, just to have one ready to use.

Victor knows nothing .... he thinks Land Rovers are better than Syncros

Well, a simple Land Rover is better than a simple T3 Syncro, no doubt. But a simple Land Rover is not better than my T3 Syncro >
Westfalia<. Thats the difference. And thats one point for my T3 Syncro Westy. That is the reason I sold my LR Discovery last year.
And yes I knew that guy called Syncropaddy, I miss the country where he lives, because there were a lot of countryside for offroading and nice places for wild camping... About the weather I won't tell anything about, comparing to Canary Islands, where I live. Maybe a Webasto or Mikuni heater can fix that problem staying there...
And Andrew thinks Syncros are better than Land Rovers. Human being is not perfect sometimes.
