I was thinking earlyer on that this growing trend for even larger french vans is all going to end it tears as they struggle their way around the country with the front wheels flailing, but then I remembered every van I see in a ditch has a 3 pointed star on it, and the only ones that are moving have a tractor attached to the front (unless they happen to be the very rare 4x4 model, which made the syncro seem cheep as that was an £8...9k option depending on what 4wd system was fitted (you could get selectable or perminant I think)).
Question is, is the VW equivilent LT/Crafter any better? You don't see so many of them in ditches so do they have a better drivetrain/traction control system for reduiced grip or it it just because the merc is more common? Suspension and weight distribution would be near identical between the two I would have thought so there shouldn't be much in it.
