Hi

Sorry if this question has been done to death already , I had a search and couldnt find any definate answers.I need to replace the O/S inner sill on my van , I had some quotes to get the work done quicker but they are more then I can afford so I am going to do it myself. It doesnt look to hard a job but Im after a few pointers. Ive had a poke around today to see how far the rot has gone and it doesnt look to bad, I also have all the panels so am ready to go.

any advice will be gratefully recieved

I've been looking at this job receantly and do do it properly. I think you'll need to remove the front jacking point and slide the sill in from the front. Or cheat and cut the sill in 3.

Ive got a alan schofield inner sill which has the front jacking point already on, its quite a hefty lump of metal anyone fitted one or had trouble with one. Going to do some more proding tomoz see if theres any evidence of joins left on the vans sill and surrounding area.

As a side note is a knackered sill a mot failiure on a van , reason I ask is Im getting conflicting information (ie. it has a chassis so their not as critical as a car sill) . Had a man out to quote for some welding who also does mot's and he seems to think that my van isnt that bad .

It's rewarding to do but there is a LOT of work including a respray if you go the whole hog! - keep us posted on your progress

Chuck us some pics up and we'll all cast a view over it

Bear in mind that the rule is (should be) 100mm from suspension is an MOT fail - much of the inner sills can be patched for a good while before you hack em out...

I found your links when searching but couldnt access the link with out the password. Im a glutton for punishment and after replacing both the rear corners and the rear panel Im quite looking forward to the sill . I only paid £600 for my van a respray is not something that Im really to bothered about as it would ruin all the character. Ill post some pics tomorrow I think the sill is fubar and Im sure the last bloke that looked at it was talking rubish

Heres some pics of the sill, as you can see it is knackered, to be fair I have had a good root about since the bloke looked at it last night . But Im a bit concerned that the bloke said it would be ok

Thanks for the link , I think I know where I am at now . Am I right in thinking I will need to cut out the base of the B piller to get the new sill in?.

no the inner sill is under the floor and the outer sill shapes around the b and c pillars.. this pic of metal mickeys is the c pillar - the outer sill folds over and forms art of the floor - marked up with the 'v's



this is the inner sill once the outer is removed...


you can do what James did and use a repair panel/sill combo section by chopping out the outside section of the outer sill at keeping the floor part of it:-


repaired with this..


And then the floor is repaired inside like this...

When I did mine I did it a little different again -I re-used a good second hand outer sill and part of the centre section panel and then replaced inner,outer and also the lower section of the centre panel and part of the b pillar, arch and also the lower rear arch piece like this...




This was old inner sill!..

Fortunatly the inner floor part of the sill looks to be solid , guess the only way find out is to get cutting. It was mighty cold this afternoon so I only spent a hour or so prodding about, going to have a more in depth look tomorrow. When I brought the van the previous owner made a point of saying that the B pillars had been repaired but judging by the patch on a patch on a patch repairs to the sill Im a bit dubious to how good they are. The flange on the B pillar that mates to the inner sill looks to be shot anyway.

only a 12 inch area around the rear suspension arm mount is an mot failure
everything else is an advise.

Have hit a bit of a wall at the moment as the inner sill is rotten but the bulk of the remaining metal is sound . Im getting the impression that Ive got to cut out good metal to get to the rest of the bad inner sill. heres my work so far
