changing from diesel to petrol

I'm running a 1.7d and I've had enough of going up motorway hills at around 40mph. I'm thinking of converting over to petrol and putting a subaru engine in. What will I need to change other than just the engine? I had the fuel tank changed last year as the old one had a large rust hole in the top. What would be the best subaru engine to go for? I've been thinking of going for a 2.5l, I just want something that'll cruise along at 70, still have some oomph to overtake things and maintain that speed up hill

Put in a 1.9td, about £300-400 for a AAZ [could even get the whole car for that, and sell the bits you don't need]

Much better than a 1.7d and much better fuel economy than a scooby, best of both worlds

£4000 for the scoobie conversion .

just make sure you get someone who knows what there doing to do it.

you will also need a new gearbox , as technically the van wony go any faster , just accelerate faster!

or go for a Golf GTi engine which will bolt up just like the diesel and give you plenty of power. In my syncro, early runs have given nearly 30mpg.

well I guess the 1.7D gearing might be a bit low, but initially, remember the Subaru will rev well past where the 1.7D governs to a standstill, like 1.3 ~ 1.5 times as much, but you wouldn't want to be cruising at those revs

Since you've got all diesel gear with a bit of work on wiring and exhausting, a 1.6JX or 1.9TD

Then there's GaryD's suggestion... you have to get the fuel pump sorted properly with those GTis, but they're cheapish and a good step up from a 1.7D, much quieter and more refined of course

Alternately, off-the-wall, guys at Syncro25Y in germany this year, swore that a turbo on a 1.7 makes it go well with higher gearing, and he had a big turbo on it (Garrett T3 /KKK K24). I drove it and it did go Ok

Buy my 2.2 set-up! It's nothing like that kind of money but I will haggle like an Iranian, though
