Exhaust very noisy

Hi

I think I need a new exhaust as mine has suddenly become very noisy. It looks very old and rusty from what I can see.

I looked in the wiki but wanted to ask do I have to get something stainless steel for £500+? I've just been quoted £1250 to fix the leaky roof (by dropping a new cap and ends and refurbing the rest) and there's more seam rust to sort.

Money is very tight so wondering what I can expect to pay for a reasonable exhaust system.

Cheers
Sarah

OK, so, 1.9 let's assume it's a late system.

Options are JK and GSF styleeee mild steel systems which cost £520

OR

Save up and spend that little bit extra and get a stainless system you'll never have to replace ever.

This is what I have ... http://www.jpexhausts.co.uk/Site/Transporter.htm the 2.1 option fits a 1.9 and is cheaper £515.20. If it was me I'd drive up and let them fit it too £125

Sorry there's no cheap alternative, swapping a WBXer exhaust is opening a can of worms DO NOT be tempted into taking the van to Quick Fit or similar. It's not that simple unfortunately.

If it's just a small hole, are you still allowed to use that exhaust wrap stuff? Might buy you a year. Or if not, the brickwerks one can be bought one section at a time so might only cost you £60-£70 for one section

Yep, obviously you'd have to see what actually needed replacing, what I posted is for a complete new system, however the links are there for components from JK or Brickwerks.

Ian.

Oh god

I was kinda hoping it could be a kwikfit job!

At this rate I won't be able to afford to keep the van and she'll have so much wrong with her I'd hafta sell for a really low price.

Oh well, beans on toast for the next 50 years then!!!

:-/

Thanks for the info peeps.

Sorry but the Quick Fit gibbons will probably snap all the exhaust>head studs off ... they just use the air tools on them like they would a Saxo ... unless the exhaust has been off recently the studs and nuts will either round off or shear, then the heads may have to be taken off to get the studs out ... engine out etc etc etc it can turn very ugly VERY quickly, probably the worst single job on a T25.

Many places will not even touch a T25 exhaust Let's hope it's just the silencer or the cast knuckle or something not attached to the engine itself

Start van, get someone to block the tailpipe with a wet rag while you lie underneath and look/listen for the blow. NB do not do what I did and burn the end of my nose on the hot silencer

The posted pic show the parts of the exhaust available individually from JK.

Fingers crossed.

Thanks Ian, will have a go at that this weekend.

hey Sarah, sorry to hear about the problems with your van,

What I would do before you get too disheartened is have a look under your van and see exactly where the exhaust is blowing from, should be quite obvious to hear/see where the holes are, it may just be the back box that is shot, if so then I would leave the header pipes well alone as said before they look like a nightmare.

The second thing is to check if yours is an early or late style exhaust... mine is an 1985 and has a early system and in this instance early is best !! If so and it is your back box only that needs replacing then there is a very good mod listed in the WIKI that involves fitting a motorbike silencer

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Exhausts_Custom

Even if you dont want to fit the bike silencer then a cheap replacement early style back box will last a couple more years untill hopefully money is less tight!

Cool, thanks Martin. I will have a good look this weekend and see what can be done.

At this rate I will need to get a new valuation coz the new roof will be more than a third of what I paid for the van!!!!

And is it actually a late or early silencer. If early I have a good serviceable one if anyone can 80/90 express it.
