What exhaust?

Hi
I have a DG 1915cc w/c engined camper. Have sorted engine, and following the engine refurb about 3 yrs ago, I fitted a mild steel exhaust system from JK, largely because I couldnt stretch to a stainless one at that time, having spent so much on the engine! I knew the system had a limited life!
I have just had the van gassed at Gasure.
And now.... the exhaust has developed a blow... (nothing to do with the gassing I hasten to add!) It's definately beyond its best!
Id like to buy a s/s system, and have been recommended the one from Brickwerks....

http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php?p ... t&Itemid=6" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

...@ £637.40 :shock:

I dont mind spending the money on the RIGHT system ( I aim to own the van forever!!) but my questions are:-

1) is this really the one to go for?
2) I have a towbar. My standard JK systen fits alongside it very well. Will Brickwerks one be the same standard 'shape' - if that makes sense?!
3) apart from Brickwerks and Turbo Thomas, what are the alternatives, and are they worth it in the long run?

Thanks a squillion peeps.... :ok

I am in the same boat as you, my exhaust is well past its best and I am looking for a decent replacement.

I have seen this company
http://www.jpexhausts.co.uk/Site/Transporter.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They look good quality but its a hell of a lot of money ! I really want one that is a little louder too., just out of interest does your current one have the pipes going into the end of the silencer or the back? mine go into the back but I have read posts describing how to fit a motorbike silencer which I would do but this only seems possible with the a side entry to the silencer.

Mart.

Bluebird customs £575.00 .......only £300 for the early version :D

VWspeedshop £425

Thanks for the replies gents.
Not sure if I have the early or late system?? It doesnt have the 'hanger' brackets Ive heard people here discuss.....
The one I have is the top one in the following picture, so I guess its the early one?

http://www.justkampers.com/shop/type_25 ... t/back-box" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The 300 quid Bluebird one, looks as though is the silencer only? Also they use mild steel for flanges, 'which crimps up better'.... surely that creates a weak point in later years? Brickwerks system is expensive, but has lifetime guarantee..as long as you keep the van.
i do like the look of the VW Speedshop one and at £425 its a fair price, but no long term guarantee...?

Pionte - whats your timescale for getting your system changed? (Ive just repaired mine with exhaust bandage, so should keep it going a litle longer!
And - have you ever had the exhaust studs out since youve owned van? reason I ask is they are mostly a pig to get out, and I ended up taking engine out and broke 6 out of eight in situ! :shock:

Now....wheres my Plusgas! :lol:

i have a brickwerks one, its a direct copy of the late original, all parts are interchangeable, so you dont have to buy it all at once, the only part that isnt SS is the knuckle.
only drawback is it may take 6 weeks to get if its not on the shelf........

READ the blue-bird advert. It just shows the back box as there is a choice of twin pipe of single pipe :wink:

Stainless system for 1700cc-2000cc with twin tail pipes,comes with fitting kit. Fits all Bays,all air cooled T25 motors and early water cooled

As above but with single tail pipe
I have a blue-bird on order for my early system which Simon Baxter will be fitting in October (lucky boy :lol: ).
He told me I had the choice of two systems. Blue-bird or Speedshop

We have some early systems on order, should be a little more cost effective than our competitors.
Infact, should have been here by now, will chase that.

looking at all these exhausts I dont see an option for the earlier DF engine code water boxer, will the Brickwerks stainless system fit? What is the main differences? :ok

Will it be better than the bluebird one I have on order for October Simon?

Things move on at a pace with your product development don't they?
I missed out on your early back plates too :cry:

How do you tell whether you have an early or late exhaust? My van was registered in january 85, so that would make it a late 84 production... Early?

Generally, earlier system has flanges on the back of silencer like this:

/*.*\ /*.*\

I was thinking about doing it before the MOT is due in November as I dont think it would pass, the pipes look fine ( relatively speaking ! ) its the silencer that is rotten !

I was very confused too about whether mine was a late or an early, but looking at your link to JK sites mine appear's to be an early one :D ( cheaper )

It looks like at some point a previous owner has had problems with the exhaust studs as at least one of them has been replaced with a bolt and the block has been repaired with some sort of metal putty type stuff ! doesnt bode well for when I come to change it ! I think I will definitely wait till the summer is over..... just in case the engine needs to come out !

If yours is the early system Pionte, then you can fit the bike silencer:

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Exhausts_Custom" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you're looking for a very long term permanent solution then Simon's (soon to be in stock) stainless system may be more suitable but the above set up worked for me ok and has a nice sound to it.

Simon -
do you have a price for the early s/s system? Will it have same lifetime guarantee as the late one on yr site? Does it take up same space as the original, as I have the towbar to consider....?

One final question to all....

what options are there for exhaust studs? The steel ones are rotten and provided I can get them out ok, Id like to replace with something that will last a longer time. Do they come in s/s as well? (or anything else that lasts!?)

Thanks again all....
:)
