Yup, did 49.95 mpg over 350 miles fill to fill up to Dai&Deb's wedding...

... with a final top-up over-filled, splashed out (and at same place as the departure one), so I call that a pessimistic... thus a genuine 50 mpg. Not driving slow, keeping up with M-way traffic between 65~ 75 generally, and reasonable A-road speed and progress (2/3 journey M-ways approx.)...


Yup, our 20 year old Nissan Micra Mk. 1 is quite a little gem

Our G plate Micra reliably achieved better fuel economy than it's replacement our Fox.

The Micra is a triumph of simplicity, and never broke down or even came close in 12 years of ownership. Worst consumption around 45mpg, best 65mpg. Mind I achieved 60mpg in the Fox, but that was really hard work. Worst 37mpg.

I even got more back for the Micra with the scrappage scheme than we paid for her in the first place. That wont happen with the Fox. (the fox is bloody good though)

Jenny will assure you that I don't spare the whip in the Micra either... it's not molly-coddled along, why I was so surprised when after 12 yeasr we finally checked the economy over a reasonable run.
Didn't say that the clutch is slipping too... not badly, but does limit us a bit. New one in this week

The Micra rev's and rev's in that way that only a little petrol engine will, really liked that little motor. The Fox's computer management clips it's wings higher up the rev range which I dont like. I remember the little glass window on the carb to check the float bowl fuel level, and the way that you could push off the rear drums by winding a bolt through a threaded hole (been a while since I did that)

We had an R reg one with fuel injection for a time as well, also very good.

Well stuck in the back of the car park that has become my back garden is a 10 year old VW Polo 1.0 and about a year ago I bet my son that I could achieve 65mpg from it. I managed 67.7mpg, admittedly I never went over 3000 rpm and was driven almost exclusively on good level roads. In spite of trying 3 or 4 more times I could never better it to crack the 70mpg. Come to think of it, I never got paid for winning the bet.

Like the Micra, I bet a brand new one wouldn't do quite as much...
The Micra's loose and rattles its cams and chains and things at idle, but buzzes along happily enough. I might try for 65 sometime
but expect I'd be getting frustrated too soon if it's over a realistic mileage. And really don't like holding people up behind, imagining they're all like me, a bit impatient to push on

Our 21 year old mk1 micra eventually died of terminal floor rot last year, she had been in the family all her life, my mum and late dads car and ours for 8-9 years. Most reliable car we have ever had. We even threw a 21st birthday party for her. Sadly missed.

I have one of these, which are great if you can stand the ridicule!
I get over 75Mpg month in month out, plus tax free, boring reliability etc.

But then it does look like it does..........

Yes, around the seat-belt pickups into the inner side of the sill, or at the back around seat belt points as well... keeping an eye on them at least (below). Rear sills inner & outer done twice now, 2nd time rebuilt properly! Had to do both the front - to rear brake pipes this last MOT geoff, a right pain and didn't really deserve doing - but didn't argue with them

Yep, its a Honda insight, but the old original one. I believe it was the first commercially available hybrid and strangely still by far the most efficient. The new insight and the crz thing that they now make is not even close and frankly does the same MPG as a mondao, which misses the point a bit.

They tell me you can get low 60s out of a 3 series now, which is really impressive too...

Bah humbug! 50 mpg! If my 13 year old Audi diesel goes below 50 mpg on a run at 70 - 75 mpg, then I start to worry something's up .
