Van's been running ok apart from a slight stutter when you accelerate, now it just won't idle, dies the minute you take your foot of the pedal. Any ideas??? :)

Check all small hoses and brake servo hose. Chances are its sucking in air somewhere. Report back.

I too have the same problem - so I'm all ears.

So far, I have:

Changed after-market fuel filter
Cleaned cone-shaped micro fule filter in carb
Changed dissy cap & rotor arm (looked shagged)
Removed one of the jets (one with cross-head slot) and cleaned
Sprayed LOADS of carb cleaner inside carb intakes
Trimmed perished ends off all small bore breather pipes

And - removed brake servo pipe and for testing purposes, capped the inlet manifold pipe that it connects to.
This last measure allowed it to run a week ago, so the servo pipe was duly re-fitted after checking for leaks (found none).
I also used the carb cleaner to spray around gasket sealing areas, but could find no leaks.

It ran fine on choke, but once warmed up would not idle. With the intake box removed from the top of the carb, the only way to keep it running was to hold the square (choke?) flap down a little more so that it was open 2-3mm.

Not trying to hijack the thread alfieboy, just thought I'd condense all of the things that people have said to check on this and the Brick-yard forum as it might save you some search time (took me quite a while to find all). I was going to start my own thread, but thought it would be pretty pointless having two the same :?

I'm now thinking of using Bromyard VW who advertise on ebay (Item number: 230471765079) unless anyone knows how to cure this without shelling out £170 for a rebuild. Don't get me wrong, the service they offer seems excellent (60 individual tests and adjustments as well as bench testing your carb and setting it up before returning it to you), but I would rather sort the problem for as little £££ as possible due to financial circumstances. I also considered buying a rebuild kit form Brickwerks, but I'm not convinced my carb is set up properly anyway owing to bodges found form cowboy garage previous owner took it to.

Just to add - the vehicle is a 1989 1.9DG and drives fine until the revs get low when it begins to feel jerky. It either runs at about 500rpm or conks out.

Put another gasket from a spare carb i had...still the same problem.
Cleaned the jets out, checked all the fuel and vacum pipes, all are fairly new. Now i'm stuck for ideas :? :? :?

remove the pipe from the carb to the choke pull down unit and suck.
If you can suck air it's shagged and will not open the flap and it will suck air into the engine.

i had the same problem mine turned out to be a very small split in the accelarator pump valve (No 7 on the pierburg diagram)
take it out and bend it to see if there are any small round splits in the rubber.
