here's a quickie. can i change the oil filter without draining the oil?

also the oil level might be a bit high, i thought taking the filter out and replacing with one without filling it up with oil might reduce splash and get me through the hc emissions test?

cheers.

:)

Yes it is possible to change just the filter but I doubt it will make any difference to the emissions. The overfill should be addressed and removing/refitting the filter (draining the oil in the filter each time) is an option if you don't want to disturb the sump bung and seal.
Your best bet is to tweak the mixture in a little to reduce the CO, it can be done by ear if you know what you;re listening to...

ah ok thanks. i thought that the oil might be splashing a bit in the cylinders if slightly overfilled and might be giving me excessive hc rating. she's not had a filter changein a long while i bet so will do that too.

yes you can, but it is best to fill the filter at least half way and spinning the engine over on the starter motor with the central dizzy cap (petrol?)lead removed to prevent the engine running dry whilst the filter gets filled, so you'd be back to square one. do a full oil change you then know its got the right amount of oil in there and its fresh stuff, draining the oil is just a 13mm sump nut to undo. https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Pe ... oil_change" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Whack a new air filter in there whilst your at it, that would probably help more than the oil change with your HC's

I suppose I should have added....the filter should be replaced everytime you change the oil.

The exception to this would be someone who is changing oil at very regular intervals ie; 2 - 4,000miles where at a push you could change the filter every other oil change.

But to change the filter on dirty oil is not the done thing.....15W/40 mineral oil costs around a tenner and changing the oil is known to lower emmisions for an MOT which is what you are after.
