Hello everyone,

I've noticed my 5 sp box has a bit of a weepy o/s driveshaft seal. Not too bad, although any ideas how quickly these things deteriorate? (Daily driver doing 250 miles a week)

Anyway, I was planning on getting a seal to replace it, and VW tell me I need a 091 301 189 but that they are now obsolete...

Does anyone know where I can get one and how long I have till I'#m in real trouble?!

I'm about to do same job although I haven't yet located new blue sealing caps encountered when you start to remove driveshaft flange so praying I can remove them without damage.

Thanks, just ordered a pair from brickwerks. Let me know if you find the blue things, which I guess I will be encountering also!

Aiden is yer man if you need the blue blanking plugs. Anything gearbox related = Aiden

Mind you, replacing the seal may well only be temporary. If there is wear in there (which apparently is often the cause of the seal leaking in the first place), the leak will be back again. I face that dilemma but figure its worth at least a try considering the cost of the seals. Besides, not much point replenishing gearbox oil if it leaks.

You dont want to be running the box low on oil.... better to have to top it up every so often than leave it and cause a lot more damage..

Seals do wear out and if they get debris in them.. you may get away with a new seal

Good work, doing it with the box out looks much nicer!

I did this at the weekend from under the van, it was a pain and getting the oil seal out took hours as it's so hard to get at.

I would def recommend getting an oil seal puller if you're doing it with the box still in the van, tried the screws but it didnt work so spent ages slowly destroying the thing.

Other than that, not too bad a job, I needed an impact driver on the plastic cover screws (and mole grips on one which someone previously had mangled).

Drain plug was surprisingly clean compared to some I've seen

Besides fixing the leak, having done this and put new oil in (castrol 80w90) I don't need to double clutch into 2nd when cold, and it is no longer notchy coming out of 4th/5th after a motorway run.
