Sticking throttle

Hey guys, i seem to have a problem with my pierburg 2e3. I have recently changed my 1.9 water-cooled for another engine the same but since getting it all in and running the throttle seems to stick open. The engine was running fine before removing it from the other van because i drove it back from where it was purchased. I have checked that the cable is not snaging anywhere and also that the return spring is located correctly.

Any ideas guys, im losing my hair very rapidly indeed lol

Thanks.

is the auto choke still connected to the carb and fed with coolant?

Yes it is mate. Do you think that could be affecting it? How would that make it not return to the idle position?

The auto choke is a complicated mess of springs and levers :D
the cold start mechanism has three step throttle stop positions in conjunction with the auto choke.

it raises the RPM when the engine is on choke, the first step is around 2000 RPM when it's stone cold.

when you motor warms up this throttle stop steps down. There are various springs to assist this
Removal of the carb is the only way to see it working.

Sounds complicated, what went wrong with the good old fashion pull chokes lol.

So is the best thing to do to disconect the auto choke then?

If so, what does this involve?

Hi,

Rather than take off the auto-choke (which would give you trouble cold starting) first have a fiddle with your fast idle screw. As Kev says, there are three steps to the fats idle to assist with cold starting. The fast idle screw allows you to fine tune how fast this is.

The screw in question is number 35 on this drawing https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Fu ... -_Pierburg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - it is fitted to the throttle arm.

Let the van warm up, then with the engine still running, using a torch and contorting yourself into a strange position, have a look to see if screw 35 is pushing against anything (might want to take the large back air inlet box off to make it easier to see, but make sure there is nothing small lurking around to get sucked in!)

If screw 35 is just pointing to air (when the engine is warm), then it is not holding the throttle open. However, if it is pushing aginst something then this is your problem! As a temporary fix whip the screw out, but be aware that whilst this will cause the idle to drop to normal, the engine will run very rich as chances are your choke flap would also be shut. Would do you for a short while though whilst you sort the choke out properly.

If number 35 is not touching anything when the engine is warm, try unhooking the throttle cable and opertaing the throttle by hand - you will see where the throttle should rest, and be able to see if it returns to this position. If it is sticky, then you can work at what point it sticks, and possibly what it sticks on!

Let us know how you get on!

Cheers,

Alex

Hi alex, sorry just got back online after the worst day of sanding down ever.

I have looked at the screw you are refering to and it does not seem to be affecting anything at all wether screwed in or out. Also something i noticed is the fact it only seems to stick open wen i touch the throttle from inside the cab on the acc. But the cable is not catching on anything???

Also If anyone reads this and has any tips on rubbing down without a DA sander i would be very greatful, borrowed an industrial DA sander off a mate and turned out to be c#!p but now i have a great dirty mark down my van. Carried on by hand but it is a panel van conversion so no rear windows and a very achey arm lol

Cheers ppl

It probably is'nt this simple but mine use to do something similar -it turned out to be the lever under the van that is connected to the peddle at the front. It should have a cover over it mine has'nt it was covered in road carp some wd 40 sorted it! Hope this maybe helps. Jack.
