I've been trying to remove the small screws that hold the cab floor mat down. After posting on here I realized they were Pozidrive but having bought a couple of pozi screw drivers they still wont come out. I think they're just too old and knackered and the heads have worn over time etc.

i've also tried a number of phillips heads and they just wont budge. There must be another way to get them out - can they be drilled out?

Be VERY carefull if drilling the cab floor ... the fuel tank's directly below it

ooh, how do they work then? need a drill or can they be powered by wrist alone?

Drill um out and use a slightly larger self tapper in the hole once floor goes back down!

FYI - Lots of stuff in Wiki on removing screws and bolts. Did you read it first?

With self-tapperd the trick is to put everything into getting them out forst time, before you've totally mullered them.
Clean heads out
Drop of plus gas downthe sides if poss
Coorect screwdriver, good screwdriver
Tons of pressure BEFORE attemtping to unscrew
Can use an impact hammer effect (tap top of screwdriver while twisting driver with mole-grips, mate pressing down too
Proper impact driver (hammer-blow not battery rubbish )

But the best way (just used it for self-tapper holding brake pipes right behind bl***y steering rack on a Micra) is to use this technique..

No screw/bolt punch? Then use a deliberately blunted edge of an old wood chisel, that's what was to hand outside other day and that got two difficult tuckers out on't Micra that. Bit of technique picking up the edge and whacking it just right, but you've 10 x better acces with those floor mat screws.. give it a go, cheap and works.

Mini-moles can often start pan-head self-tappers moving!

Drilling out - self tappers can be 'really' hard steel, a cobalt (Co8) drill should get the head off though, go for a size fractionally larger than you estinate the top of the thread shank - and wacth that tank on the follow through. All you really need to do is get the head off though, no more.

There is a UK distributor, but we use it/get it as part of a joint RAF & BAE venture. Will have a word and see if I can, ahem, acquire a box (or two)

If you can remember/find that UK Distributor - that would be great.

Otherwise a cobalt drill tends to go straight through the screw.....

Silverline are cheap, low quality tools, sold at builder's merchants and the like. OK for the cruder jobs but not to be relied on for owt delicate or complicated.

hanks for the tips everyone - i've decided to go for the drill bit type screw removers for now - managed to pick a set up from a DIY shop for £10. would have loved to try the Ez Grip but needed to give this a go at the weekend. If it doesnt work i'll be ordering some.

oops, no I didnt - for some reason i didnt think screw removal would be covered. just slapped myself on the wrist for you all!

Cannot see for a minute how they would help... maybe I'm thinking of different screws, good luck anyway

For my stuck in posidrives etc I use newish mole wrench layed down flat as posible so the milling in the jaws grips the head. You sometimes have to tap the jaws down with a hammer to get a good purchase. You need to adjust the wrench as hard as posible to lock but without wriggling it off Trust me a firm grip on the widest diameter of the head will beat all your screwdrivers and anti-friction agents. Another way is to get a grip from above with the points of a large pair of side cutters taking care to work them into the very hard metal before applying the turning motion.
