with the camper blues again!

van - failed mot - mostly due to corrosion areas - one brake line and one headlamp failure -
sits on driveway looking glum - owner of van (me) sits in kitchen looking at van - looking glum -
is it salvageable - and how do i find out?











i'm in epping essex -
van doesnt have mot or tax -

which way to go -

any suggestions or ideas would be useful -

Gosh, wish we were a bit closer buddy, Chickenkoop and I would be willing to get you at least solid again - picture two guys revving up angle grinders and being restrained. I think its time you learnt to use a MIG - well worth it.

the only way your going to kmow is to get a few quotes and balance the cost against the current value of van with no MOT and what it may fetch with one. There is a club80-90 member who does body repairs and he may give you an approx guide to a cost if you send him pics and the MOT failure notes. Ermie571 used him for her van repairs so she will have his number, send her a pm.

Personally I would go back to the testing station and ask for a VT17 Notice of Appeal ( stand back and watch them shyte themselves) and simply take it from there.
The guy from the ministry will be on your side of ANY dispute there is regarding an MOT issue, in fact If the MOT station is found to be too keen to fail your vehicle they will be advised to fix you vehicle FOC ( Free of Charge)....

Your satisfaction will be knowing the tester may loose his authorisation to test for a couple of months, But you might not be able to go there ever again.....But on the plus side you have your motor fixed for nowt and now with a 12 month ticket.....

right - the brake line may be an issue - and that is repairable. Get underneath and do some pictures, and ask on here. Don't know how close you are to Simon
TooManyToys, but he will come to you at weekends.

That bodywork......can't see how that is an MOT failure....its not sharp. Unless the strength is gone underneath. But like fritz says...that looks suspiciously like...oooo££££££ of welding....lets fail it!!!

Yep, I used Damien on here....replaced panels for petrol filler cap, bottom of central panel, rear wheel arch, and panel behind bumper on the side. Lots of metal work, but all done. And all the filler that was there, that looked no worse than yours, passed 2 MOTS!!!!! If its sharp edges, they can fail it.

Don't be glum. You got the weekend, now go take some pictures of the brake line, get that notice of appeal.....or, ask out for a recommended MOT station near you, and put it through again. You can drive not MOT or tax to a prebooked appnt. You can get your headlamp working - get the easy stuff fixed before you send it back in.

Good Luck, bit of work and you will be there....then save ££ for panel work.

Speaking as a tester and looking at the pictures, it is hard to tell whether it is a fail or not. The o/s arch looks like it has filler in it and think I would fail that, but the others just look like surface rust....Like Fritz says I think its worth an appeal, even if its just to see the look on the face of the tester that did it.

'Corrosion within ** cm of jacking point' is what they seem to have highlighted.

Righty ho looks like as Ian as pointed out they have put it down to corrosion within 30cm of a jacking point/suspension mounting prescribed area. The outer panels have little to do with the strength underneath, so they have either spotted something or are just doing it by the book.

It doesn't look too bad even if it has gone underneath as well, But check the area around the rear trailing arms. Have a look at the following pictures on link.

See how yours looks, em's was fine and i gave it some good poking so you might get away with a bit of outer panel work. It might even have yellow marker on suspect areas for you already. But i'd advise having a good look and getting some close up shots of the member. If it is shot, don't panic, i've got a shell thats in fairly good nick underneath i can take as much as you need off of.
