Pierburg 2e3 stalling at idle

Hi folks, yes it's yet another post on a 2e3.
I'm reasonably new to T25's. Me and my girlfriend bought ours in July before setting off on a 2.5 week 2,300 mile jaunt round Europe.
Up to now it's been fine, however, took it out for a quick spin on Saturday and all is not well. After taking bloody ages to fire up it did eventually (I figured it wasn't a huge problem as it's been sat for 4 weeks without being started) and it ran just as it ever has. Managed to do a few miles then just as we were pulling into a supermarket it cut out when I dipped the clutch. It fired up again straight away but needed foot on the revs to keep it running. I figured this was potentially a problem with the choke sticking on when hot possibly?
Went out to it last night though and fired it up. It sat ticking over on the drive for a few minutes quite happily before gently dying. Once again, it would fire up again straight away with a dose of right foot but would then die soon as pedal was released. I'm now thinking maybe blocked idle jets and it was just the auto choke that kept it running at 1st?
Any opinions anybody?
I know I could start off with just trying some carb cleaner down it while I give it some revs but having had a close look it does seem that theres a fair bit of gungy crap here and there. It seems some of it's coming from what I think is the gasket between upper and lower bodies, and there is quite a lot of crap round the back where there are 2 vacuum connections. I've got some photos I'll try to put up later.
Does it sound like it's worth a rebuild?
Should probably mention, it's an '83 1.9 water cooled (DG I think)
