Certainly can be done. You just have to remember that the windows are damned heavy going up so the motors need to be man enough. My bus is quite ratty compared to others in the area but hey I've got elecric windows so I can be smug on those at least. I fitted old (but never used) electric motor units that fit directly on the winder handle. They literally screw on to the door panels.
In my view they ARE worth fitting as you cannot (annoyingly) wind the passenger window up or down whilst driving, but with elecric I've got much better control - particularly on those rare hot days. If you have an inventive mind you can adapt a few things to make them work.

I want to fit electric windows aswell but im unsure of what motors and arms to buy, i have some from an astra mk4 but no idea if they will fit.
Does anyone know if alot of arms and motors can be used universally aslong as they physically fit?

Had all the stuff just sitting there, was going to fit it to the golf but thought it might be good on the van so I will give it a go and see how I get on, will let you know.

Your best bet is to get a motor which will fit inplace of the origional winding mechanism and still use the channels (wie snake)and everything else, I got mine out of a jeep LTD, the motors just bolted on where the winder came off.
Nice and easy, there was a write up with a load of pics on the brickyard a couple of years ago.
Cheers

Electric Windows.
Having balked at the price of OEM electric windows and the rapidly rising cost of suitably bodgeable Golf ones.
I thought what else will fit, after ages looking around my local scrappy I found an M reg Jeep Cherokee with a similar set up
The first thing to do is to remove the winder regulator and slides from the door then, carefully (don’t damage the flexible coil with the window mount on) with a grinder cut the old regulator off this will also entail banging out the two welds on the rear, these hold the regulator in place on the slide and stop it slipping. Remove the flexible coil and keep safe.
Split the Jeep electric motor regulator in two by banging out the securing pins and split in half the non motor side of the casing can have its welds drilled out and then be welded to the Vw slides through the two holes in the rear, a little galvanizing spray and bobs your uncle.
Feed the flexible coil back into the slides. The motor assembly can then be bolted back on with suitable bolts the whole lot can be fed back in to the window lining up the top and bottom bolts you can then see where you need to drill holes for the motor mountings.
