Spinning sump plug

I have discovered a spinning sump plug
Although it's not leaking and I can dump the oil if desperate, from the filler flange.. it wont undo or do up, and it would make life easier if it did.
So how do you get it out?
ideas would be helpfull

Hi Kev,
you can get spanners that undo on the flat rather than on corners,
Think Halfords have them.Unlike most ring spanners, they have raised edges between corners.
Also, pair of stilsons may help ???? I would give the plug a few sharp taps first and a bit of release oil.
My final solution is the best, and i have done it.
When Kwik Fit have an oil change offer on, take it there, They will get it out.

What's the oil's history ? I change our's at 4,000 these days, or by ear .... filter every other change.
I would heartily recommend
NOT going to S**t F*t even to check the tyre pressures.

This happened to Timthetrader when i first met him. He had the sump taken off and retapped by a garage near him for not very much money. Just to be safe in the mean time to get him home i bent a thick tent peg and used the tin wear bolt to fasten it in place to hold the plug in place so it couldnt fall out. When the garage did the job for him they put the tent peg back thinking it was part of the engine arrangement

When i fixed putneys sheared exhaust with a rock one time they didnt put the rock back with the new exhaust though

some people just dont like bush mechanics somtimes

you didnt check this before you put it in ? too busy painting it
use a flat screwdriver and a spanner , prise the nut slightly with the driver and try winding it out. But what will you do after ? helicoil ? or try retapping with one slightly bigger ?

heli coil is the only answer me thinks...... but there wont be no taking the sump off!
you are kidding me this is the first time you have dropped the oil since fitting? right?

OK to clarify
The engine was sat on a lifting bench. (being painted

)
So the old oil was drained out by taking the filler tube off as I couldn't hold the engine up safely to undo the plug.
I refitted the tube and filled the engine with fresh oil
It was only trying to fit an oil pressure gauge and wanting to let out some oil it has come to light.
I will try the prying method, if it succeeds ... then drill it part way in, and tap
thanks fellas

If it is turning and won't come out watch out during the prying process coz the chances of shagging the sump are pretty good with it being alloy....
What you might find is that some dozzy cuunt has helicoiled it in the past and it is the insert and the plug which is spinning together in the casing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,If it was my problem I would be welding summat to the sump plug and then with the aid of a puller,,,,slowly unwind and pull at the same time..........and with luck it should come out...
Once it is out you may find the new hole is too large to re fit a VW sized plug......so an alternative will have to be found ( Vauxhall oil way blanking plugs are a good choice).
Taping the crank case from the underside ( as if the motor is installed) to prevent swarf from getting where the sun doesn't shine, will help, then flush any excess out with cheap flushing oil or diesel.
Regards

can't you just put the sump on off the 1.9 kev then sort it at your leisure?

Rozzo , there isn't a sump as such on a flat four , its the two half's of the casing ,
Kev try two drivers and a extra hand to wind the plug out

Kinell J when was the last time you changed your oil ?
The d****ls have a pan sump same as a 'normal' engine, but like Mark say's on the flat fours it's part of the case casting.

I don't bother with helicoils or timeserts, I'm forever removing sump plugs with the bleeding things attached to the sum plug.
I tap the sump to M16 and fit a new plug, you can go as far as M18 if needed, but thats the last chance before it's mega bucks to sort out.
