That would be VW's own 15W/40 Quantum Blue mineral.

Morris 15 40 multi grade oil or similar. no synthetics! done.

what is the crack with not using a semi or fully synthetic oil? i dont understand that remark as the ratings can be grately inproved from 0w/40 or 10w/60 and many more. all synthetic based oils will exceed vw stated API rating, how can a thiner oil at start up (reducing oil preashure) and easyer flowing oil through out the engine and a thicker oil at very high temps be a bad thing? i cant think of any car firm that would use any thing outher than a synthitic based oil any more.
can any one give me a real answer (based on facts) as to why not to use synthetic oils.

hi Neil call Jim gray from the engine shop or email on info@theengineshpo.info, he will tell you the crack as he was none impressed when i told him wot synthetic oil i use to use. i wont even pretend to be an expert, (hope you appreciate my honesty) but he has done me a few lovely engines now and i just following the words of the wise, after all ya dont get ya shop featured in top mags without knowing a thing or two about the flat 4!

Another view on this.
Personally I stick by what I've said before, fill up with what you're happy with but change REGULARLY. For me El Aldi brand is fine and never used expensive oi in a flat four EXCEPT with highly tuned ones. By that I mean rebuilt crank, performance cam, etc etc. For stock regular changes matter far more. If you're bothered about wear, tip some teflon in it .

and fore some that often none at all,
hehe right my hand book, the haynes manual, and a vw mech i spoke to today, ow and the engine shop, all state MULTIGRADE engine oil to api sf sg, vw 501 01 or equivalent, so there it is. said by the maker himself. plus i got new engine and have been told specifically by builder to only use multi 15 40, i got a warranty to honour guys! its like the vw tech guy said to me today our engines origins lie deeply with the 1st bus and bug's and hasn't developed that much in scheme a things since way back then. and it this that doesn't make them entirely suited to modern oils, e not saying they wont run on then just this his advice. so hope that helps the first question at top of list. like i say it all a matter a personal choice. and personally i dont want to chance the price of a can of oil against a rebuild. others may think different? least it blows i safe in knowledge i done all i could fore it. its your call people, mum said life would have difficult choices lol. the longevity of ya motor lies ultimately with you, as wot ever i say will always be challenged. all best

My opinion (As a timed served grade 1 VAG mechanic and Audi Quatro technician) sorry for that but you did want justification.
The problem with modern oils is viscosity, the (thickness) of the current crop of synthetic oils, they are generally too thin for these crudely engineered lumps (and that isn't a put down just a comment on how engines have evolved)
Engineering/machine tolerances have just got finer as newer technologies/engines have come on stream, these newer thinner oils are better suited to the tighter tollerances, increased temperatures and greater demands that these newer engines and increased service intervals put on it. leaving these slighly heavier (thicker) mineral oils more suited to filling in the gaps....so to speak! of older type engines.
From experience (in my own engine) if I use a thinner 10W 40, it isn't long before I get the noisey tappet syndrome as a result of this thinner grade running out the hydraulic tappet elements everytime the van is parked for more than a couple of days. Using the 15W40 is an instant fix! (honestly, I've tried it)
I've got two gallons of Mobil 1 (0 W40) in my shed as we speak...none of which will ever see the insides of my 2.1 MV
Luckily I have a good friend works at my local VW commercial depot and I get Quantum Blue at £10 plus the dreaded.
As a side note* I was in 'THE RANGE' yesterday (household store) and they are selling 5litres of good quality UNIPART 15W40 Mineral for £14.99 which isn't bad at all I thought.

Concur with Martin. and even the supermarket multigrades available now are better than oil that was available for bugs and bays many years ago.

I am service engineer on high speed german labelling machines.
We only use mineral oils, and Diageo etc decided to use an equivalent synthetic in all gearboxes etc. KLUBER £300 litre (10times the life of mineral oil,it states )
The synthetic oils blew all oil seals etc.
When autopsy was carried out, it was found that mineral oils are designed to allow the minor particles of metal and genaral sh**e to be distributed within the oil without affecting the oils balance.
The synthetic oils reject the particles and gain pressure.

just read the link by covkid, and that explains everything very clearly and from what i gather it would encourage the use of synthetic oils. as for raising oil preasure, well all engines have a preashure relief valve that would or should maintain a constant oil preashure.

I agree - thought I'd treat mine to some expensive semi-synthetic and it sounded like a bag of spanners. Back on the mineral and it sounds lovely and quiet again.
