Dashboard light

Hi, got a recent and intermittent problem with the oil warning light. It's not coming on with the other warning lights
when I go to start the van, but sometimes it does function as it should (but not very often at the moment).
I used the search facility on here but could only find "buzzer of doom" info.
Any ideas what the problem / fix could be?
Cheers
Tony

Ouch !!! I would start to check for oil leaks as soon as possible or failing that check the oil level.
I've only mentioned that because that happened to my 1300 Beetle (the oil light came on at idle) and approx 1,000 or so miles later the engine blew up (for the second time) and I had to replace the engine for a brand new mexican carburetor engine.

Thanks for your reply, I'm not sure if we're talking about the same symptoms though? I've been back and edited my original post, not sure if I'd explained it very well.

Could be a poor connection between the low pressure switch and the dash oil warning light, or the switch itself may be on the blink.
1.Connection at the white multipin connector to the PCB (back of 'clocks' on instrument panel).
2.Junction T7/1 in the engine compartment relay box, (Forward left side).
3.Two pin connector T2 in the engine bay where both high and low pressure switch wires are (separately) connected.
Low pressure switch wire should be blue/black. Switch should be between pushrod tubes left side.
Disconnect the wire, at pressure switch, and earth it and the oil light should be on with ignition on.
Low pressure switch should be reading close to Zero Ohms from connector to earth with a multimeter, (wire disconnected engine stopped)

Thanks very much Mike, gives me a few avenues to explore, much appreciated.

it knows you're looking for a replacement so its sulking tone
sounds like a bad connection or switch to me m8

Tony I know your's is early cooling system but does it have the B.O.D. ?
The intermittant nature of this makes me think it's either the pcb breaking up or the sender/wiring at the engine end. Have you tried electical cleaner in the multiplug connector to the dash pod ? Check the brown wire to the snder between the pushrod tubes ... it passes by the stone guard that covers the tubes and my be chaffing on it ?
So long as there is sufficient oil there and the fault doesn't follow a pattern ... i.e. it only happens when the oil gets hot or it only comes on when you lift off the accelerator ... then I shouldn't lose sleep over it.
Ian.

I don't think yours has a DOPs and has the LED feeding directly to the oil pressure switch via PIN 13 of the multi socket. The DOPs system also connects via pin 13. Whichever you have you could test that pin 13 goes to ground with the ignition off. If it does then you may need to check the PCB/LED (and DOPS if fitted). Like everyone says, probably a wiring fault or duff pressure switch.

I had all sorts of weird dash light problem, oil light not going on the coming on and starying, water light flashing intermittently etc, all of which turn out to be caused by corrosion and bad connections on the white multipin connector to the PCB

Also explains why it fired one end of a wheel cylinder down the back lane yesterday, spraying me in the face with brake fluid at the same time!

I was treating it to new shoes and drums at the time.

Is BOD only on later engines Ian? I hope so, sounds like it can cause a lot of problems.
I'd really like to get that stone guard off to have a look behind there, but it looks like it's held in place at the top by one of the exhaust bolts which is heavily corroded.
Thanks everybody for all the other comments and info as well, duly noted.
Angelo, what is DOPS please?

only a guess but is it Dual Oil Pressure System/Sensing
