cv joint leak

I've noticed what looks like oil (possibly grease) on the bottom of the gearbox. It seems to be leaking from one of the inner cv joints, but hard to tell how big a leak. Any advice on what to do? It's a 1Y engine with an Aircooled petrol 4 speed gear box, though i'm not sure of the code.

Hope this doesn't ruin my plans to go away this weekend :(

Could be a flange seal oil leak where the drive shaft comes out of the gearbox there is a oil seal.

so would mean it's gearbox oil that's leaking?

More than likely.
Grease can only escape from the rubber gaiter unless the joint has come loose, as long as the gearbox has enough oil in it and the seal is not pouring out oil it shouldn't stop you using the van.

thanks for the help - this will be my first try at camping in the van... can't wait :D

Not really, Undo the filler nut & dip your pinky in, If you cant feel any oil, top it up till you can, Put nut back in,,,go camping, :ok

Thanks everyone. Doesn't sound like anything too major then. Will check the oil level tomorrow and maybe top it up. Reckon I'll leave the rest to the garage... the stuff on the wiki seems a bit much for me, especially to do in the street.

Went away to exmoor for the easter weekend and had an amazing first trip, completely missing the rain!

Got the garage to have a look this week, and they reckon the leak is from a seal inside the gear box. He says it'll cost hundreds to sort properly (rebuild), but should be fine if i check it every couple of months and top up whenever necessary. He also said there was no nasty lumps of metal on the magnet when he removed the drain plug, so sounds like no damage done, and he didn't charge me a penny :D

I have no clue about this, but does what the mechanic says sound about right?
