Retarding dizzy without vacuum

right, my vacume unit is fubar'd so i need to retard my ignition.
It should by 5deg @ 900 revs but anyone know what i should retard it to until i get a new unit??

Buy a vac advance for £20ish n do the job right n get better performance? Brickwerks sell em...

Have you removed the vacuum advance tube and blown down it to check it isn't blocked. Have had this happen a few times and had to replace them in the past. Without the vacuum working the ignition will be retarded as it is unless someone has cranked it to compensate for the vacuum, in which case it will be overadvancing. Hopefully, someone will advise you on a possible compromise timing wise without a functioning vacuum advance. I would be guessing and thats not a good idea, as said above, get a new one pronto.

If its not working, then leave timing alone if it was OK before... can be harmful to statically advance it, as vac does this dependent on load, if you do put 98 octane in it
You don't say what the engine is
Replace vac unit, if its a 2.1 it has both adv and ret functions.
DJ's have a high compression ratio and are all retarded about 5 deg for 95 octane, so take care
