Gas tank pressure reief valve?

I filled up my Westy gas tank about a week ago and since then I have had a smell of gas inside and around the van.
I have found the leak to be coming from the pressure relief valve which has a red plastic bung in it.
It is leaking intermittently and seems to be when its a warm day.

when I filled it up the dials on the pump stopped rather than going up slower till it stopped if you know what I mean.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Is this just a case of its full and the warming temperatures are causeing the gas vapor to expand and open the valve, and should I just bleed some gas from the tank via the cooker?
Obvioulsy gas is dangerous so I have to be careful.
many thanks Rob.
