Quantum is out and Fuchs (SAE 15/40) is in. It's not cheap but it's what all the ppl in the know are using.

Isn't it, FUCHS synthetic is about the cheapest around, so their 15/40 mineral can't be 'expensive' surely, or are we comparing to prices a year or two ago?

I never pay more than £7 for oil - I just change it regular.

Do you people in the know think magnatec 15w 50 would be ok in a 1.9 watercooled 1986? Igot about half a 5 litre bottle left and was thinking of using it for top-ups!

FUCHS is good stuff IMHO
I think Magnatec has a mono-molecular addtive that can remove deposits and free-up rings (improving compressions). It also is claimed to reduce friction and increase load-bearing. I've seen it used in race saloon cars (Rovers).
Wondering where the other half went!
Can't recommend it one way or the other, but if you do use it, would be an interesting experiment to take the compressions first and see if they improve over a few thousand miles.
I did this with the additive I believe Castrol add to Maganatec many years ago, and very consistently compressions improved, in one engine I saw 210~220 psi across the cylinders!
Perosnally I'd either run it on Magnatec or not, rather than mess about...

Fuchs is good stuff & not really expensive. I bought 2 cans of 15W40 together with oil & air filters just before Christmas & I used the 15% discount voucher I got at Run To The Hills. Plus VAT is down to 15%, so not a bad deal.

Just rung GSF in Swansea and they dont sell Quantum 15/40
And there Fuchs is 14 quid for 5 ltrs
However, they recommended straight 30 or classic and air cooled cars
9.99 for 5 ltr

SAE30 was the recommended grade of oil for air cooled engines. Don't forget your 10% club discount at GSF.
