Industrial vw engine identification

A few years ago I bought a freezer van auxiliary engine off ebay.
Its a VW diesel engine, the number is 068 D04052
It looks like its power output is 27kw (label on the timing cover)
Can anyone tell me how the engine differs from a non turbo 1600, and how it is restricted, is the head, injectors and pump the same.
Any info on industrial engines and how to convert them for road use would be appreciated.
Thanks
John

I used one of those, years ago. It needed the oil pump changed and the servo pump. It went about as well as the original engine, which was so fast that you could cut your wrists in frustration and have them heal in a journey of 100 miles.
I'm not saying it was slow, but i was once hooted from behind by a guy on a Raleigh moped!

What is the actual engine Code, not the engine Number?
e.g. ADE(==AAZ); ADG (== 1Y)
They're normally 1.9s
The injection pump might be different, governed more (usually 3600 rpm).. with the right pump and exhaust they are identical to the equiv auto versions..

I've driven this from Devon to Finland twice, once towing an Austin seven on a trailer behind, keeping moving is the trick, had to use first a few times near Newton Abbott, the biggest hills on the entire journey!

Here is a piccy, on a machined face above the vac pump, see how feint it is?
... and a list of some of the Industrial diesels, from our Wiki, see it's all here if you look

Ok the code is *068D 04052*
I guess the stars show the beginning and end of the VW stamps, with 04052 being the engine number, there are no obvious signs of any numbers being removed etc.

Quick google gives you:

vw
industrial motor
36 kw/49hp
1588cc
4 cyl
cyl diameter 77
Anything else?

49hp is stock for the typical 1.6 diesel anyway.

They aren't less powerful but often governed differently..
You really want an ADG or an ADE to pull at T25

injection pump will hold it back, the rest of the internals are the same.

Had a look on ETKA (which also does industreal motors of course).
Seems to think the 68D engines have the same injectors and pump as some of the passats and golf 1.6D's so maybe its just a full on car engine. I would have thought they'd only have given the two pumps the same part number if they were both ajusted the same, as all these pumps are very simular to start with being a modular design, its the settings that make the difference.
There are other pumps in the list that claim to be governed to 3-4krpm but the 68D just says its a bosch pump.

Maybe because it is the lowest powered of the all, it has a proper Bosch pump setup as normal, to give the power quoted, which someone says is the same as the car engine...
Pretty sure the 1.9s are governed to 3600, mine has a sticker on the cambelt cover saying this (uMax =3600), ADE, and it has now got a Bosch pump with the bigger drive taper...

Thanks everyone, I bought the engine as a a spare for my non turbo 1600, so I will probably pop it in at some time.
It has a metal tag on the timing cover saying max revs 2780 and that the power is 25.3kw
I will probably end up using my old pump and injectors as they are fine.
Are the cranks the same as the 1600 turbo ones, as my caravelle is making a terrible noise from the bottom end.....

Dunno on the 1.6D
But both ADE ADG cranks are same as the AAZ (turbo), just the rods are different on the non turbo. ADE even has the oil jets I think (mine did)
