Constructing a bed in front seat area for growing child.

Our little boy has now outgrown his corner spot in our van (Type 25 1989).
A Dutch couple said they had made a bed in the front seating area. Apparently it goes across the seats and over the steering wheel. Have any member done something similar and if so do you have photographs?

Thanks,
Katie

Thanks Louey, I think I'm going to get a JK version - they look good and I've always been pleased with their stuff so far. Your van looks the same colour as mine. Do you know its proper VW name? My old van is due a lick of paint.
Thanks katie

I call it slate blue/grey - i'll have a look at the brochures. I might have some front doors up for sale soon in the same colour, so look out if you need some

I made one out of wardrobe hanging rails & brackets from B&Q & some cheap fabric (colour matched to the van of course!)

It is strong enough for my 11 year old to sleep in it & he says it's really comfy - the best bit is that it cost less than £20 to make!

please ignore the extra holes (they are now covered up!!) I had a little trouble with the positioning!

I made one up out of some box section and a couple of bolts welded in and the threads cut off to make locating pins.

Here are some more pics.

Do the front of the poles just rest on the dash?
Like your idea, keeps the tension of the bed off the vehicle and site them lower down as well.

looks like you can open the doors too without the bed falling out

In our van we still have the bench seat up front, as there are only 3 off us we can all seat up front.
At night we have a base made out of 6mm ply that we put across the seats and topped of with 3' foam cushions.
Our 8 year old loves sleeping up front and has even had her couson top n tailing.

Missed the question when it was first posted. The 2 shorter poles rest on the dash and in a bracket on the pillar just behind the passenger seat. Means you can open the doors also provides a good strong frame. The only downside is the packed away size. It all rolls up and slips into a cover my wife made. I store it across the van behind the rear seat. I had a full width R&R.
