Buzzer of Doom on a 1985 1.6D Transporter?

Hi,

On the final 100yds of a 10 mile trip today the oil light came on accompanied by it's irritating electrical buzzer, this was shortly followed by the temp light illuminating. The temp gauge was reading only halfway and has, so far as I am aware, been functioning ok. Oil and water levels seem to be good and the engine sounds as it always has.

There may have also been some loss of power, but being a 1.6 diesel on a steep hill with a passenger I couldn't be sure and had no intention of carrying on driving to find out.

I have just returned from a 1500 mile trip with the only niggle being a few drops of oil leaked on one occasion which was noted as it's been leak free up until now.

I've just started the bus from cold and the oil light and buzzer kick in within a few seconds.

I'm not much of a mechanic but have heard that by the time these warning lights come on the damage has often already been done? Does anyone have any diagnostic tips or any idea as to what might be breaking or broken other than my bank balance?!

Theres a lot to go wrong with the sensors and circuitry - but every time mine has gone off it has meant the end of an engine....

Thanks for the speedy responses. I had taken a look at the wiki but had missed the obvious.

I'll keep my fingers crossed it's the electrics as I had a problem with battery charging that traced back to dash circuitry. But for now those few drops of oil are keeping my feet firmly on the ground.

Whatever, the trip was worth it anyway.

Yes I have been through that with my 2.1 DJBX. For a start the man at GSF asked which of the three colour coded sensors I required. I forget what I settled for but it didn't make any difference so as the oil pump inards were cheap as chips I replaced them taking care to do all the flatness tests. That made no difference. I then tried to understand the sensor electronics to no avail. I have an idea that what you see on the dash is processed info rather than a direct connection like on other (normal!) vehicles of that age. So a number of little blips could turn into one big long one. I deduced that while my engine didn't rattle and went well without burning much oil it was probably in half decent nick only having 110,000 miles on the clock. So just to make sure I fitted an oil cooler in the rear panel just to the right of the oil/water filler plate aperture. I can still get the light on if I let out the clutch in gear at tickover but what the hell am I worried about. I know them there diezels must work their socks off on hills so maybe there is your answer. I got pictures of my installation if you want to see but don't ask me to upload them on this forum as I havn't had any success with eithr Muchos or Picturethingy! Maybe I need a visit from a 7 year old Tefal kid or sumat (and before the pedants pipe up) plus gardian or responsible person. Damned software engineering!!!

My 1.6 na diesel needs 20/50 oil anything else and I get the buzzer, I recently toped up with diesel grade oil but not 20/50 and my old friend the buzzer returned :)

Thats because your engine is very worn and the 20/50 takes longer to squeeze through the gaps in the bearings.

It's a time bomb.
