I've had my nice shiny camper for 2 weeks, was all set to pop off to Alltypes tomorrow and his starter motor dies in Tesco's petrol station (at rush hour!).

So fitting new starter motors then - easy?!?

just use a hamer to give it a whack and you can still go to All types

died?...you may find a little maintenance may revive it unless it's burnt out

cruddy contacts and sticky soleniods are usual

hit it with hammer, if that fails get a push start and you ccan go to all typoesE1

BTW - its a very easy job to change it - takes 5 mins if the bolts are in good nick - least it is with a diesel....

petrol is easier than diesel, starter is closer to the wheel arch

Thanks folks, I have tried hitting it with a hammer but nothing happening. Don't starters normally fade a bit? Haven't had any problem with starting before.

Still going to come along to alltypes but it would have been good to come along in the van.

how has it died ?
could be a wire thats just come off ,
give us a shout if tha needs a hand ,

check the signal wire from the keyswitch hasnt dropped off the solenoid, what are your symptoms?

I ran mine with a faulty starter for years, having to tap it with me starting hammer every now and again....

Ive had a look this morning and all the leads seemed to be connected fine so I've taken the starter off (great job with a hangover!) The wire connecting the solenoid in pretty gunked up so I could give that a clean.

Is there some way I can test to see if it's working while it's off the van, connecting a 12v supply??

make sure the thick wire link from the body to the gearbox is clean.

Finally got Mr O' Leary back on the road today so thanks for your help and suggestions. Fitted a recon starter motor and cleaned up the earth lead and other connections, replaced starter bush (what fun to get out!) as suggested and starts on first turn now.

Must be something in the air for starter motors going as mines gone. Can hear a click when the key is turned, but starter motor does not engage.

So tomorrow I will clean up all contacts to solenoid, starter and earth. If this doesn't work where's the best place to whack it with the hammer?
