ignition barrel removal (1984 Holdworth conversion/ petrol 1.9 engine

My ignition key does not go fully in to turn to start engine. I have looked in the barrel and there seems to be a small metal rod floating around. I have purchased a replacement barrel, but cannot see how to remove the old one. there are no holes in the barrel to depress the spring on the body of the barrel. So am a bit stuck, as hopefully will be using in 2 weeks time for a holiday away. There seems to be no holes in casting
holding the barrel.
Any suggestions or expertise on this would be greatly
appreciated.
Regards
Lloyd

You need to drill a release hole into the aluminium housing , have you got a Haynes or Bentley manual?

Pretty sure that Bentley has the diagram that shows you where to drill a smalll hole to release the barrel, its not in the Haynes Book of Lies, might be in the Autobooks Transporter manual that covers the Bay and early T3

Hi there, many thanks for the replies I have a Haynes manual only. If I need to drill, to suppress the spring do you know where and what side and hole size required I should drill please. Is this all I need to do to withdraw the barrel do you know?
Many Thanks for the replies I appreciate.
Hopefully will be OK to do as I cannot move van at present.

You will probably need to replace the plastic busing.
Also use a bearing puller to get the housing off the column. The housing is brittle aluminium and if you wack it it will snap.
Ask me how i know.
I recently replaced the housing so know about removing the ignition barrel.
