Ignition coil

Looks like my ignition coil is knackered as the ohms aren’t in-line with the spec that they should be. I need the pin type with the grey sticker. Brickwerks do one but it’s out of stock. Does anyone know where else I can pick one up? Heritage don’t seem to have the grey sticker version.
Also, does anyone know how to test the amplifier plug?

This is fantastic thank you! Where did you get this info? Assuming not Haynes as it’s not in mine?

Good to know!
I’ve been through most of the checks and they all worked, struggled with the last two though as didn’t have something suitable to turn the engine over manually and struggled a bit with the last page too, couldn’t seem to follow instructions properly and couldn’t work out what was or wasn’t supposed to be connected to do the test.

Still pointing towards the ignition coil as from previous test the ohms aren’t right. If anyone knows where i can get the grey sticker version other than Brickwerks I’d really appreciate it!

The weird thing is VW changed the coil from the 211 part number to the 191 part number for 1988 MY upto the end of 1989 MY and then changed back

Only thing that changed in the ignition system according to the parts catalogue, were the spark plugs, the rest stayed the same; spark plug leads, same TCi unit, so I really don't see any reason for not fitting the 191 part number 191 905 115 A, as unless you are running the original spark plugs (which are 2 year service interval so unlikely) then chances are the ones you have are cross compatible, and anyway the ones available now aren't the same as the original ones - the Bosch plugs Brickwerks sell now are single electrode and are cross compatible with the two versions of original matched to the coil plugs

Obviously the coils from Bosch currently available don't look the same as technology has moved on

Brickie wrote a useful guide to checking the coil Brickie Blog Coil Testing

Ok so now I’m a bit more confused haha. Mines an ‘86 and I thought I had the later grey sticker one? Which is the part number starting 191. I’ve got NDK spark plugs. What’s the best way to check which ignition coil i need to be sure?

That’s the method of testing that I used 👍 and the ohms aren’t right.

The differences between the two coil specs is so little I really wouldn't worry about it.
We aren't using 1980's fuel so any starting issues won't be down to a minor variation in the HT voltage delivered to the plug and who cares about spark plug life when the vehicles don't do 10's of 1000's of miles a year? As long as its making a good fat blue spark it's AOK

Do you mean NGK ? what's the code number on them eg BUR6E
are they single or triple point ?

Coils Green label Bosch 0 221 122 349, VW part number 211 905 115 D

Grey, I don't know Bosch part number, never had one, VW part number 191 905 115 A

sorry if I got them the wrong way around

a 1986 van should originally have had the Green Label version, I have 3 here on the bench I will check them all
