CS Diesel Spigot Bearing?

Hi All,

1984 CS code Diesel 1.6 (non turbo)

I have a rattling sound when in neutral and the clutch pedal up. This noise stops when I press the clutch. I'm thinking it's the spigot bearing?

If it is I can remove the gearbox and replace it, will probably do the clutch at the same time. But would appreciate any input as to how likely my diagnosis is to be right.

Also I only seem to be able to find diesel spigot bearings for JX code engines? Anyone know if they are the same?

Thanks

Paul

Might be the Clutch release bearing thats shot. Pretty sure you can buy a clutch kit that has it included from Brickwerks

Hi

I did think that but then thought it was more likely to be the release bearing if it made a noise with the clutch down rather than up?

I had those symptoms . I found one of the 4 coil springs near the centre of the clutch  friction plate broken .

Thanks for replying.

Oddly enough that's what it sounds like.

I can get a three piece clutch kit can't seem to see a spigot bearing for my van though. Just don't want to not have a £10 part to finish the job after taking the gearbox out of it turns out that's the problem

Actually looking at Brickwerks seems the spigot bearing for the diesels is the same as the JX as their one says suits all VW t3 diesels. Didn't notice this B4.

Thanks all. Will get it ordered but might wait for slightly better weather before doing it.

Will report back what I found when I do it

https://brickwerks.co.uk/product/spigot ... yl-inline/

suits all T3 diesel engines . So exactly the same for cs as jx .

Could be that when pressure is applied it stops rattling about.. or as cecil says the springs in the friction plate could also make that noise.

Either way might as well do the lot :ok

As for the rattling i guess something wrong within the gearbox is a possibility.

Obviously I'm hoping that's not the case but it's possible, though it works fine in every way other than the noise. I changed the oil fairly recently and the magnet wasn't full of swarf or anything.

I really hope it's not gearbox related

I've had that noise on many vehicles. I agree, clutch springs. Not necessarily broken, but possibly just loose. You can test by releasing the clutch pedal veeerrrryyyy slowly, in which case the noise probably won't happen. Nothing much to worry about, but if you do pull the gearbox, it's a very good plan to change the spigot bearing anyway. They do fail. Ours failed in Serbia, and it was a long drive home with a dodgy clutch!🙄

My business partner bought a brand new BMW 330i back in the day, and the main dealers changed the gearbox twice, when it was the clutch drive springs all along😂
