Recommendations and request for JX replacement

Post by Rich Mc »

Hi all,

my 1.6td JX engine has head gasket issues and I've been recommended to have the engine replaced.
I tinker but this kind of work is beyond me, so i'll be paying someone to do it. I'm in central south england.

Until these issues surfaced, I've liked the 1.6TD - I have never been in need of more power, and fuel economy is acceptable. i drive slowly, I'm happy at 55 on the motorway. It is a happy holiday van, not a Ferrari. That said, I also value low noise (kids in the back to try and talk to) and fuel economy, so upgrades on those fronts would be nice (but not essential).

My question is, would you recommend a like for like swap or a switch to a different engine (AAZ, AHU, GTI, etc.)?

If you'd replace with another JX, would you go for a remanufactured from AW Engineering (at ~£2300) or one from a donor vehicle, and if the latter, do you know anyone with one / have one you can sell?

If you'd do a swap, what engine would you go for to minimise cost and difficulty of conversion? (noting that i don't care about driving fast and i've never had issues going 30 (or less) up a hill, i just want something that works and isn't worse fuel economy than what i have)

cheers in advance
