Oil pump replacement - thicker body cover plate lip problem

Another simple job becomes a mare

I've  replaced the oil pump on my 2.1 T25 Waterbox  (without removing engine ) and due to the pump body being thicker than the original, the lip of the cover is preventing the  engine mounting  bracket from fitting flush to crankcase. There's   a gap of 1-2 mm between them when bolts are fully tightened. Will this be OK  or is there a risk of them working loose and the engine  breaking ?
I'm considering  removing the cover plate and grinding down the lip as advised  when fitting higher capacity 30mm pump , or  taking off the paint from the outside face and  turning  it around .

Suggestions would be very appreciated .

No, it will certainly not be ok and will do significant damage to carrier, bolts, engine case and oil pump cover, possibly snapping the bolts and engine dropping. Whatever you do, don't fully tighten down like that!
When fitting the thicker oil pump I fit these washers as spacers between block and carrier. https://brickwerks.co.uk/product/washer ... inc-flake/
Also ensure the coolant pipe across the oil pump isn't fouling on the pump cover/nuts.

I usually dress the pump cover corners to get rid of the stamping burrs and get it parallel to the back face (use a flap wheel on angle grinder) then file a generous chamfer (around 3x3mm) on the corners of the engine side of the pump recess in the carrier, no risk of failure as far as I can see.

Ignore the modified centre web by my fingers, this one was off my wbx6 before I changed the pump. Two chanfers like this sgould give you enough clearance when combined with giving the cover corners a tickle to get rid of the peaks.

Marco Mansi has a short video showing where to remove the lip of the pump cover.

I also remove the four M8 pump securing studs and re-install them with 20-21mm protrusion* to suit the thicker oil pump flange. Degrease the studs and tapped holes thoroughly, blow out and fit the studs with screwlock compound.

*Check that this suits your application

Or use an EMPI flat cover plate?
Chris.
