Gearbox oil is GL4 really necessary

All the manuals and specs call for GL4 gearbox oil but I have read that GL5 is now safe to use in our gearboxes as it has been upgraded, GL5 is a better oil apparently, anyone got any views on the subject please.

Yes GL4 is needed
from memory
or GL4/GL5 which complies with both apparently.
GL5 rated only has extra additives that will dissolve the yellow metals in your gearbox, modern gearbox parts are different metals or coated I think or something like that.
Aidan or one of the other Gearbox specialists will be along in a minute to give you the proper explanation but that's close enough
