Engine behaving badly. BAD ENGINE, BAD!!!

My 1.9DG engine is running very rough. It starts and goes OK; accelerates well and top speed is fine. But, it splutters; it sounds like its coughing!!! and not running very smoothly at all. This is only noticable when stationary, due to road and wind noise when moving, I wouldn't be able to hear the engine that clearly,. But it does the same thing when I accelerate it when stationary. So presumably it does it at speed also.

I've changed the oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, rotor arm, dizzy cap, HT leads and I've (finally) set the timing. But still no better.

What's left? Carb?

I hope not, 'cos if I have to fiddle with the carb, I'm likely to break it, what with me being a bit mechanically ESN :( (about 15 years ago, I blew up a bay on the M3 after having 'fixed' a leaking fuel line).

Anything else, you can think of that I should try?

sounds like a vac pipe leakto me..........
check the advance / retard pipes are all connected and not leaking, and the brake vac pipe off the manifold.......

You will have to remove the top of carb & clean out float bowl--it will be full of crap--the only way out is thru the jets-temporarily blocking them & causing the rough running--you can get a gasket set (Pierburg 2E3) from GSF--

Yeah, but that sounds like a 4 spanner kind of a job and I am most definately a 2 spanner kind of a guy at best. :(

The vacuum pipe from the distributor to the inlet manifold is one. It's about 8-10mm thick and is usually just pushed on.Over time the rubber becomes brittle and can crack causing air leaks. Just take a sample piece to a motor factors or Halfords so you get the correct diameter. There may also be some pipes coming off the air filter housing that go into the manifold too, but I'm not 100% sure on that cos I've only got a 2ltr Aircooled to compare it to. Whatever rubber pipes you do replace, before you put on the new ones soak the ends in some hot water-it softens them up making it easier to push them on without ripping them. There should also be a thicker pipe coming off the manifold that goes towards the front of the van to operate the brake servo. Check that all is well with that and also that it's actually connected. And just check that any other pipes are connected and are in good condition. It's also been known for the petrol pipe to rot from the inside dumping loads of gunk in the carb.

Thanks for all your help chaps. I took the carb off and cleaned it up as per the instructions given by Skell on this thread http://archive.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=14948 (I would recommend they be transferred to the Wiki for future reference by dipsh*ts such as myself).

Anyway, that and replacing the fuel filter seem to have done the trick and the engine is running much more smoothly :D (cooee look at me I'm practically a mechanic). :wink:
