Hi
hope someone can help, my starter motor continues to run until I turn the key back slightly. Is this a faulty ignition switch or a starter motor problem?

However that leads me to another question, how easy is it to fit another ignition switch?
Having looked at the Haynes manual there seems to be no info on how to remove and replace.

Its a doddle use a decent supplier for the switch. I got one form ECP that was faulty from new, took me a long time and a lot of wild goose chases to work it out.

Easy to change. Seems daunting to remove steering wheel but is fine. Consider adding a push button to start too as ignition switches fail regularly

Its interesting you should say that as they are indeed a common part to replace, however, when you think that this switch was a common part across pretty much the whole of the VW, Audi car range up to the mid 90's then you would expect at 30 years old for many of them to have be replaced.
Fail regularly..it is indeed a commonly changed part but once done will rarely give problems for another 5 - 10 years. However, it is also rare for them to just fail out the blue and if asked many users will report months of iffy starting issues before finally packing up...so IMOA a separate push button could create more problems that it might resolve.

I'm only saying that based off my experiences. It's the first thing that went wrong on my van after picking him up. And I have changed it twice - I was given the same advice by the RAC about installing a button and its been a great modification

And I've changed a fare few myself, including on three vehicles I've owned myself (Polo/Passat and the T3) but all were over 8 years old when they needed doing. I'm just not convinced that they are that unreliable that it warrants the fitment of a second button that's all. Pretty much the same can be said for radiator thermo switches and I know many on here unnecessarily to fit 'panic' overide switches.

I must be lucky.I have never changed a ignition switch in twenty years of owning these vans.

It's a mod I like having the button which was a step forward from an RAC fix when it went last time and the guy ran a wire from the starter exciter into the van and to the front so to start - you simply turned the key to pos 2 and then leant backwards to touch the wire to the pos terminal of the battery behind the Mrs chair. Got us round Cornwall for the next few weeks !

I value my chicken switch way more than the dash dimmer switch it replaced. May never need it, but its there at least

LIke the sound of this. How would I wire a chicken switch in?

I'm trying to remember how I did it - took a feed from pos 2 on the ignition to 1 terminal on the switch and 1 from pos 3 I think to the other side - mine is a simple push button 2 terminal - its only live if the ignition is on pos 2. Someone more technical might be able to offer better advice
