Key turns slightly Van cuts out....

Hi all,

Bit of an odd one.

Driving home last night just ouside Llandrindod Wells, I came to a roundabout and the engine died. No indicators worked and I managed to mount the curb. I tried turning it over 1, 2 crank and it turned over went to start then died.

In the meantime I phoned the RAC to come save me. I got back in the cab, turned over again and it started. Now the vans idiling nicely and I touch the key and move it slightly to the right (as if to crank) and the engine dies again. I cancelled the RAC which was for the best as they didnt have a patrol round the area for 3 hours.

Its happend twice again today, a slight move of the key and it dies. I have managed to get it stated again and it's as if it has to go to the right place ie no 2 to ignite work.

Question is, has this happend to anyone?? Do I need a new key barrel??

Thanks all

New switch by the sounds of it. (Apparently having big bunch dangling can cause it :lol: )

You could try squirting a load of WD40 into the barrel, dunno.. worth a try?

Yes it needs a new switch, not an uncommon fault.
No a big bunch of keys won't damage the switch but it does wear the key barrel more rapidly.

okay,

Thanks for diagnosing fault.

So I take it I need to follow this

https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/VW ... ion_Switch" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and get this part

https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/ignition-switch-t3.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Looks really bloody difficult to do. Is it??

Yes you've got it, it's not as bad as it looks, just be methodical and once the new switch is in re-assembly is easy. You might want to replace the shear bolts holding the steering column with normal bolts just in case you need to take the dash out or similar in the future, good luck.

Well I did it,

Not bad, all I need now is the steering wheel to come off while driving.

Key works as it should. Pretty chuffed with myself to be fair.

Thanks all. Love this place.

As a sidenote, managed to get my intermittent wipers to work aswell, loose spade in stork.
