Afternoon,

Just tried a search on setting the timing and got over 800 to read, the wife wants a hand, something to do with Christmas so trawling through 800 is going to take time!
I have a 1.9DG 86 Auto Caravelle. I have owned it a few months and in that time I have replaced everything that carries or pumps water, both head gaskets.

I think I may get the carb rebuilt so any advice on who to use would be good.

Its a bugger to start, but once its running it sounds and runs fine. But I would like to know how to time it up please. I've set the valves, I have just one notch on the crank pulley, which when its a TDC the rotor arm points to No1 and thats what I worked to when set the valves. I do static timing on my bug but there is no electronic ignition on that, so how do I do the bus? I have a snap on timing light and changed all service parts, leads, rotor arm, plugs, cap etc

I'm slowly working through problems. The bus was owned by an old couple for years but sadly neglected in its last few.

As said it seems to run fine, but hard to start, sometimes taking two people to get it going, one on the key the other on the carb! (New battery also) There are no return springs on the carb, looks like there should be two? And i'm not sure where they go? I need to check that the diaphragm on the dizzy is moving ok also.
They'll be plenty more questions in the future, but for now I need to get her idling and starting.

Any help would be good.

Do you follow the start procedure?
One or two pumps of the throttle and turn the key.

Is the fuel falling back to the tank?
Pull the pipe off the carb (aim it into a jar) and crank the starter.

I didn't know about the start up procedure… but do now
I'll check to see if the fuel falls back also. I definitely have one, maybe two return springs missing off the carb on the lefthand side. I need to find out if its one or two and where they go.

Hard to start reads like your choke may not be working correctly.

Doesn't look like either of them photo's Maybe i'm describing it wrong. If you're stood at the back looking down on the carb, it'd to the left, towards the dizzy. You can see two holes on, the spring is attached to the bottom one, and nothing in the top one?



The second pic shows where the previous owner attached it and how! The black pipe is the vac pipe from the dizzy to the carb. If you remove the spring all together it won't return to an idle?



What should be there and what should it look like?

I don't think that is the original carb, pop up a piccie showing the whole carb on top of the inlet manifold

Nothing on the left of a pierburg.
So as Aidan says it's not a standard carb.
Maybe a weber?

Definitely says pierberg on it. I'll get some better shots soon from different angles.

A different 2e variant with no pulldown / vac unit?
Maybe got a spring in there as a crude replacement?

Managed to get out and get the numbers off the carb today:

025 129 015 J

Looks like Roger from Bromyard Vw has found my problem. Firstly I need to pay a visit I think to the guy who sold, and 'maintained' this for the old couple. The list of stuff this guy bodged for them is unreal.

So the top half of the carb is a T25, the bottom is for a 1300 Vauxhall! Its a 2e3 version and Roger explained exactly the symptoms I'm getting. So I'm up a creek without a paddle now! I'm getting very low on funds and now need a new carb!

Any suggestions on where to get a carb, and as I have an auto is it specific??
