Gearbox oil

Popped to local MF and found that they only stock 75w-90 GL4/GL5 gear oil.

Trekked around a bit and Eurocarparts sell Redline, but remember in the past this was a no for some reason and I don't like the price.

Found this Mannol Basic Plus 75W90 GL-4 + link

What is GL4 +, meets VW 501.50

What are people's thoughts?

I use Millars because a local motor factor stocks it and the few quid extra is nothing compared the the money I spent on a rebuild.

Thank you for your input - Your link is 80w 90 oil, we're looking for 75w 90, considering the amount of money we have spent on box rebuilds (plentyful) - we don't want to put gl4/5 in, it has to be GL4 75w 90.

Pete the Masnol one is the one VW 501.50 is G50, 75W/90 fully synthetic as fitted originally :ok
GL4+ is as good as GL5 slippywise without the sulphide and LSD compatible

It's GL4/GL5.

Don't like the GL5 part because of the brass present in the box. Plus ours is a Syncro so getting a wee bit more abuse than a normal road box.

nothing wrong with 80w/90 but the 75w/90 helps with the first cold shift of the day so is preferable, the syncro boxes had G50 in them I believe, the spec in Bentley for 2wd varies and is as high as G50, what was actually used in the factory and if any molyslip type additive in factory fill we'll never know they won't say. It was a for life fill.

Well I'm confused

The Millers says GL4 can't see where it says GL4/5?

Aidan told me ( also written in wiki) he uses Carplan ( is that not carlube? ) 75w/90 gl4/gl5 but I couldn't find it locally.

You didn't mention Syncro gearbox :D

Oops was looking at another Millers oil at the same time, yours says GL4 80w90.

Local MF have had problems with Millers as they are going direct to the garage and supplying hence why we have local sourcing problem.

I thought the recommendation from Weddle is to use 75/140?

This box of Pete's has only standard gears in not the Weddle HD 3rd and 4th the 75W/140 recommendation is only for HD geared boxes

At the moment the VW501.50 stuff is available from Germany and various online UK suppliers so I am using that in the workshop and for those that collect and buy oil - I can't begin to understand how the various oil blenders around the world decide how much of what they make and how they sell it and market it, all I know is it seems to be a moving market so what is available retail today won't necessarily be available in the same brand from the same supplier in a months time

The dual spec oils are fine it just must say GL4, not only GL5 for peace of mind

Add a molyslip treatment by all means it does seem to help protect the synchrorings

When my Syncro gearbox and front diff were rebuilt I bought Comma SX75W-90 GL-4 semi synthetic on recommendation from Eurocarparts. As I am just about to start running should I leave this in or drain and replace or just use as a breakin for the first 500 miles then change? :?:

Personally I would follow Aidan's recomendations. if you have the Weddle/Albins bigger gears then go for 75/140.
If standard (standard gears) like ours GL4 75w 90, I posted a link to the oil specs that I found yesterday in the original post.

Eurocarparts could only supply Redline GL4 specific, so wonder whether your oil is saying GL4/5?
